Question about Mitsubishi WS-55857 55" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Ws-55857 power, menu works, but no video

I had this thing serviced and they replaced a chip on the motherboard or something. Six months later I have a different problem. Power comes on but I can't use any buttons on the remote. I can see the menu and make changes on the menu find. I can hear static sound when I'm on Ant A which has nothing connected to it. If I connect rabbit ears or a dvd, no picture shows up.

I have replaced the battery on the remote.

I have shut it off for awhile and unplugged everything.

The last time it worked, I had plugged a video cam to the front jacks to watch it. Then I pulled them out and shut it off. I remember it being hard to pull out. The next time I went to watch it, no video from anywhere. But since I can see the menu find and change options etc, I know the picture tube and everything works fine. It is just the video from an external source.

At times the screen becomes double

When you say "double" do you mean you see the colors somewhat seperated or see maybe blue or red outlines around objects? Does the screen distort?

If so then:
Your Convergence ICs are likely failing or it is a bad solder joint related to that area. It is very common on rear projections. The solution is to replace the STK chips, check fuses and the resistors next to the STK chips. Replace as necessary and re-align via the service menu. It is about a $300 repair at a tv service center. You will need the service manual if you decide to do this yourself.

Try This:
When you notice the symptons Use this simple test to verify.
Go to the users menu on the tv.
Look for the converge option probably under setup or video setting. Converge is short for convergence to align the red and blue colors to the green color.

If you cannot move the red either horizontal or vertical, then the STK chip has failed for red section.
If you cannot move the blue either horizontal or vertical, then the STK chip has failed for the blue section.

If you can move both in each direction then the problem is something else.

Note if one STK chip fails, you replace both regardless. There may only be one STK chip in this set. If there are two, they will be right next to each other.

Mitsubishi WS-55857 turn on/auto turn off problem

After it shuts off, you need to get a code from the tv by pressing the menu and device buttons together for 5 sec. A code will flash at you made up of 2 digits. Example. 2 flashes a pause and 2 flashes points to a convergence failure. If this is not your code post yours and I will help you.

Cannot adjust horizontal blue convergence on WS 55857

You still have bad grounds on the ICs. Or maybe the solder has fused another pin. If not bad grounds on the ICs you have missed them elsewhere...Really concentrate and look for these bad grounds and check your caps with a cap check. And power resistors too!!!!!

Picture is warped (three colors diverge at edges

WS-55857 uses two STK-392-570 convergence IC's----you may have bad solder connections on them but what is more likely(I have seen this in sets that Mitsubishi made that use this chip) is that some of the pins are broken loose inside one or both of the chips.

Considering the labor to get the board out to resolder it, might as well just replace BOTH of the chips------Usually this repair can be done right in your home and takes about an hour.

If you are able to do it yourself you can buy both chips for less than 15 dollars on Ebay; if you need help I have complete step by step instructions for this repair that tells what you need and how to do the repair---if interested I can email them to you.

If you are not able to do the repair most shops charge 300-400 for this kind of repair; look in your area and if they say "needs to go to shop" keep looking; any good tech can do this repair right in your home.

Now is the slow time of year for TV repair shops so look around--I do this kind of repair here for 200-250 depending on the set --right in someones home! I have done hundreds of these sets.

If you need any help or would like the instructions reply to this comment here.

I do this for free here so if it helped you take a minute and give me a vote here.
