Question about Akai LCT2715 27 in. LCD Television

Repair doesn't fix it

Posted by BubbaBrain on Oct 13, 2008 (SEE UPDATE BELOW)

My two-year old 27 " Akai LCT2715 screen freezes now and then (and now with increasing frequency). The TV action would stay on but was going to light blue at first for a long time (maybe a year). It's now breaking up into several big vertical sections of different colors. Less often, it goes to black with a number of multi-colored thin lines running vertically. In all cases, the sound stays on. I can turn the TV off with the remote, but can't turn it on again unless toggle the power switch off (and then on) the set itself and only then can I use the remote to turn the TV on. So what could it be? Comment by BubbaBrain, posted on Nov 13, 2008 Twizted: I've had my Akai LCT2715 repaired but it's acting up again. The repair guy diagnosed the problem (for $69) as three "poofed" resistors (?) and he replaced them (for another $200) with a 30-day guarantee. Within a week, the screen was going to light blue and it's turning off with lines with increasing frequency just as it did (see above) before it was fixed. The repair guy wants to charge another $69 trip charge plus parts claiming power surges caused the first and last problems with the TV. I had since plugged the thing into a power strip, so could that be it? Or something else. Please advise. A brand new, 27in LCT would have cost me only $369.

For him to have only replaced 3 resistors and charge you $269 is ridiculous. All be it I can say he would be justified in charging for in home service $200 for 3 resistors is just wow... I have not had a AKAI LCT2715 in my shop that had this issue but if I had I would probably start by checking out the power supply which not only provides power to the TV's main board but filters it and this if failing could cause other issues or even damage keeping in mind that this is a primary fail point on these TV's. My suggestion is to take it to a more reputable repair center and get a quote on repairs. If you would like me to take a look at the power supply I can and if it needed repaired I perform this service for $100 + Return shipping and I do accept paypal so you can pay after I have examined the unit and determined if it even needs to be repaired. If you need to know how to remove the power supply I have created an instructable to help those who need it. You can find it here http://www.instructables.com/id/AKAI_LCT2715_Power_Supply_Removal/

I very highly doubt that is merely a power supply problem,I would suspect that it is a small signal board (aka scaler board) or at the very least, have the inverter boards checked

It is possible that it is due to the power supply since you said "I can turn the TV off with the remote, but can't turn it on again unless toggle the power switch off (and then on) the set itself and only then can I use the remote to turn the TV on"

The power supply could be failing which could cause that symptom. Otherwise if it was not the Power supply it would likely be the main video board that is failing. In any case I would probably take a look at the power supply first as it seems to be a common fail point of the Akai LCT2715.

If it is the power supply you can have it replaced by a TV repair service. They usually do not bother repairing them which ends up 1) costing you more 2) being unnecessary. I offer to repair these Power Supplies if they are indeed faulty. I charge $100 + Return Shipping for the repair.
