Sony CX-12 Camcorder gives message when memory stick inserted

I have a new (1 month) Sony CX-12 camcorder.  Using the 4gb memory stick pro duo Mark 2 which came in the box there is no problem.  When I insert the 8gb memory stick pro duo (not mark 2) I get a message on insertion and every time the card is accessed that says "Memory stick may not be able to record or play images correctly."  So far all images have been OK but every time the message gets displayed a white message box covers the entire screen. The manual says that the camcorder can use any Memory stick pro duo, not just Mark 2, up to 16gb. I inserted the 8gb card in my computer's card reader and it read the card without a problem. The three files that I had recorded played just fine on the computer.

Well everybody seems to agree that this is a feature even though the message box obscures what you are trying to record.  Interesting though that the reasons don't match.  Sony support claims that the message is displayed because of the 4gb file size issue on 8gb and 16gb media. That would mean that it would happen on even a Mark 2 card.

Funny, I have the opposite effect.  I have 4GB Media that is NOT Mark 2 but records fine in my CX12.  It even records still images while I am shooting at full HD (1920x1080i).

However, i bought a 8GB Mark 2 chip and get this same message. It does however let me record in full HD and take images, but will not let me enter camera mode to record images  The only difference I can find is that this new Mark 2 chip is made in Japan while all others are made in China or Korea.

So my experience is...avoid Japanese chips.

I just has the same problem, that is to say, I bought a 16gb stick off eBay and it came up with that warning. So I brought the camera and stick into Sony retail store to determine the problem and although he didnt give me any details as to why he thought it might not be working properly, he asked me what I paid for it on eBay and deducted that amount from me buying a new one from them. Although it cost me C$120 ($60 after my deducting my eBay purchase), it friggin works and thats a relief!

Hi!
This is a feature and not a defect of the CX-12 that reminds the user that the memory stick inserted might not be able to record the data from the camera effectively. HD video requires a memory stick with a relatively fast data read/write speed, and the CX-12 recommends not using any other stick that is not Mark 2.
Fortunately, though, as you have found out, it does not affect the camera's ability to record in non-Mark 2 sticks.
Hope this helps!

WHAT memory stick do i use for a DCR-PC9E

You probably need the old-style memory sticks, as this is a fairly old camera, or an adapter. See this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memory_Stick
Adaptors are cheap : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Memory-Stick-Pro-Duo-Adapter-/251482939281?pt=UK_Photography_MemoryCardReaders_RL&hash=item3a8d8d1f91 is but one example, there are lots for sale out there or your sony shop may have one.
You may have to check to see if the camera is capable of reading and writing to a card of 4GB size, but as you have already bought it, it's worth a try.
Hope this helps.

    • 1 Visit the Sony Support site (see Resources) and download the Sony memory card software. You will need to specify your operating system. Save the file to your desktop.
    • 2 Double-click the downloaded file to launch the installer.
    • 3 Follow the onscreen instructions to install the Sony memory card software. Restart the computer after completion. Once the computer starts back up, it will recognize the Memory Stick Pro Duo when inserted into the computer's memory card reader. You can browse the files using Windows Explorer or the installed x-Pict Story software.

I bought a new Memory stick for my Sony DCR-TRV320 Camcorder and when i switch my device to memory mode, it tells me "Memory Stick Error."

Check the following:
Memory Stick is inserted in correct position and orientation in camcorder. Try re-inserting several times.
Write-protect tab is switched to allow writing to memory stick (on back of memory stick)
Memory Stick is formatted in FAT file system (this should already be done except if memory stick has been formatted in a computer in a different format)
Memory Stick is not over the maximum capacity memory stick of the camcorder.
Memory Stick is not full.
Memory Stick is clean and dry.
The dcr-trv320 is a 2000 yr. model and came with a 4mb capacity stick and can probably only use up to a 128mb capacity stick or possibly 256mb. Most memory sticks you can buy today are 1GB, 4GB, 8GB etc. memory stick pro duo. and are probably incompatible. E-Bay has some of the old memory sticks like the 128mb for sale.
There is a slight possibility that static electricity discharge zapped the stick. Try another memory stick or try the stick in another device.

I have just purchased an hdr-cx105e camcorder. It works fine on the hard drive but i have problems when adding a memory stick. I have tried a 16gb pro-duo just purchased, an 8gb from my sons psp, a 4gb and...

I read the manual in .pdf format off of the sony.uk site.
It does appear that it's not that hard to do what you did according to the manual, and you tried to use several memory sticks pro duo from Sony.

So, I do not understand why it would give you this error, unless the camcorder is faulty, somehow.

I would take it back to the place you bought it, and ask for an exchange for the same item after explaining what happened to you.

Good luck on this.

Hi

call your camcorder manufacturer and inquire for a firmware that supports the memory stick. chances are its not compatible with the camcorder since this handles large memory.\
