Question about Panasonic AJ-D230H DV/Mini DV VCR

1 Answer

Tape Transport I have an AJ-D230 that goes through tape transport modules like crazy. After a few months of use, I have to get a new unit installed. I was told that using a mini-cassette adapter can be the culprit, but, I've never used on this deck. Anyone know what could be going on?

Be sure that whoever is replacing the elevator assembly ( transport module ) is putting in a NEW part and not an old part that is still works.

I would start doing this repair yourself... there are only:

4 screws

2 cables: one that powers the cassette load\unload motor
and the other is the tape sensors cable

once you pull the cover

they are very small phillips head screws: you NEED a very good, long, small Magnetic tip screwdriver.

Tthere is a manual screw drive near the loader \ unloader motor: it has a Red plastic phillips head drive screw.
This manually moves the Loader assy in and out: you will need to move it to uncover the two screws that are near the front of the machine.

when you find these screws: its a good idea to mark them with a red Sharpie, for easy finding next time..

If the machine is getting heavy use, then 5 months may not be that bad, if the machine is babied should last alot longer.

either way you can get a handle on the situation and save youself some money by bringing this particular service 'In House'

I did this fix last week on this unit.
it took me 15 minutes.

Why did my panasonic PV-9450 eat a a tape?

Hi Melanie -

First, you should keep away from the T-160 tapes as they are thinner and more likely to jam. The T-120 or less sizes are better. Next, use high quality name brand tape - not the off-brands found in the bargain bin.

Do the regular maintenance. All tape is "dirty" (including cassette, 8 track, reel to reel, etc.) and will deposit dirt on the tape heads and "transport" mechanism. Transport consists of capstan and pinch rollers that push / pull the tape in and out of the housing. when dirty, they slip and interfere with the "pick up" of a quality picture from the tape. Use of a quality wet cleaning system at regular intervals (or whenever picture quality deteriorates or tapes jam) is highly recommended. Here are some googled results for wet VHS cleaning systems:

Good luck!

Err on display when insert tape, no functions work.

Two things. First there is some damage to the tape transport mechanism. Only a good look around will confirm this. Secondly a faulty mode switch.

Toshiba dvr670ku - vhs tape won't play, shuts recorder off

look to see if tape will fully load and if FF or REWIND work, if not a transport problem, drive mechanism not moving the tape, unit will sense this and shut unit off----even a problem in the loading mechanism for the VHS tape not loading the tape all the way will do the same thing.

I had someone bring a 1985 tape to be transferred and it seem sluggish and distorted. I put the tape in a new case but it still did the same thing. I put in a brand new tape to see if it was okay and now...

yes there are head cleaning tapes available. You cannot use them for an hour after cleaning as you put a few drops of fluid in the hole that is transferred to the tape and then to the head, The transport reels are something it does not clean,.

Use 70% alcohol ( chemist) to clean the rollers.

It may be that the tape you were trying to copy is deteriorating amd may clag up the works again.

Tapes will only play back in black and white

This could be three categories of fault:
1. Dirty video heads - try a head cleaner tape. The best ones use a "wet" system, with special cleaning fluid applied to the tape before use. Don't be tempted to use a normal head cleaner tape and adding any other liquid as this will cause more damage.
2. Worn video heads or misalignment in tape transport path - no simply fix, and probably un-economic to get fixed. To get new heads fitted will be very expensive, that's if they are still available. To get the tape transport path checked and realigned also expensive - technicians hourly rate. You could also remove the top cover of the machine (unplug from power socket first !) and have a look if any foreign object has got in and is trapped in the tape path - don't touch anything inside the machine with bare hands as the oils in your skin can cause other problems, use tweezers, preferably plastic.
3. Electronic fault with video circuitry - again, no simply fix and expensive - technicians hourly rate plus any components replaced, if still available.
It saddens me to say it, but unless you have some sentimental attachment to your machine, if using a head cleaner doesn't work you're probably better off buying a new machine, but hurry as VCRs will be going out of production sooner rather than later as digital recorders take over the world !

My Panasonic AJD230 is spitting out some but not all, tapes

The capacitors are old and need replacing. And what I mean by caps is ALL the caps. These decks are known for failing capacitors - even if the deck hasn't logged much play/record time - time is not kind to them. Panasonic have ready made capacitor sets for the decks and even though you might be able to fix your transport problems by replacing only a portion of them, it's advised they all get done at once. That's between 10-20 hours for an experienced tech and it will cost you. What can you do?

Panasonic aj-d230h

without knowing the exact error message, I can only speculate, but most rewind errors I have seen with the AJ-D230 are related to problems with capacitors on either the reel motor driver board or the system control board. the firewire upgrade (AJ-YAD230) is no longer available.

The mode switch is the device that monitors the various positions of all mechanical components in the transport area. It is usually an encoder type device, located near the center or right side bottom of the transport. But, before I'd condemn the switch, I would certainly check and see the the transport is "cycling", and that nothing is slipping. This is usually the case when this symptom crops up...accordianman
