Question about Panasonic AJ-D230H DV/Mini DV VCR

1 Answer

Tape Transport I have an AJ-D230 that goes through tape transport modules like crazy. After a few months of use, I have to get a new unit installed. I was told that using a mini-cassette adapter can be the culprit, but, I've never used on this deck. Anyone know what could be going on?

Be sure that whoever is replacing the elevator assembly ( transport module ) is putting in a NEW part and not an old part that is still works.

I would start doing this repair yourself... there are only:

4 screws

2 cables: one that powers the cassette load\unload motor
and the other is the tape sensors cable

once you pull the cover

they are very small phillips head screws: you NEED a very good, long, small Magnetic tip screwdriver.

Tthere is a manual screw drive near the loader \ unloader motor: it has a Red plastic phillips head drive screw.
This manually moves the Loader assy in and out: you will need to move it to uncover the two screws that are near the front of the machine.

when you find these screws: its a good idea to mark them with a red Sharpie, for easy finding next time..

If the machine is getting heavy use, then 5 months may not be that bad, if the machine is babied should last alot longer.

either way you can get a handle on the situation and save youself some money by bringing this particular service 'In House'

I did this fix last week on this unit.
it took me 15 minutes.

Tape transport failure on tc-366, motor noise but no tape movement

These units are mechanically in need of a good cleaning and application of new grease in the slide plate mechanism. The Play idler that was in the last one i rebuilt was sent off to Terry' to have it get new rubber on it. There is certainly a lot of work to be done on these units but they can be made to work again. Personally though, I would just get a Teac A2300S or SX and use that as the overall maintenance and longevity will be better in the long run. I have serviced hundreds of them and I still do. The design of the Teac is not so much dependent on all kinds of mechanical parts as the Sony is. The last TC366 I worked on took about 4 to 5 hours to correct all it's problems. Then when you are done you still have a lever activated deck where the Teac is a solenoid deck with remote capability. I worked at both Sony factory Service and Teac Factory Service so I have had experience in each item.

Tape heads are stuck will not disengage. transport will rew and fast forward but will not play or record. also could not eject tape. unit is a tascam porta one mini studio.

There is a cam system in the transport and they need to be lubricated. It might cost more than $100 to fix. Sometimes the gears have rounded off teeth that you can not get anymore.

When I turn onto the VCR function so I can rewind or play a tape, it beeps. The eject button flashes and in the upper right hand corner flashes c:31.22. I am not able to do anything. Is there something...

That error means that something is out of alignment or stuck in the tape mechanism. You have two options: to have the camera inspected and repaired, OR if you don't want to do that and feel you don't have anything to lose do this:
Remove the tape.
Close the tape door completely.
Close the LCD.
Turn the camera off.
Remove the battery.
Give the camera a good firm smack or two on each side with the palm of your hand.
Power the camera up and try the tape again.

It sounds crazy, but doing that can possibly help unjam whatever mechanism is locked up.
This has worked for many people.
Hopefully it will take care of your situation too.

I had someone bring a 1985 tape to be transferred and it seem sluggish and distorted. I put the tape in a new case but it still did the same thing. I put in a brand new tape to see if it was okay and now...

yes there are head cleaning tapes available. You cannot use them for an hour after cleaning as you put a few drops of fluid in the hole that is transferred to the tape and then to the head, The transport reels are something it does not clean,.

Use 70% alcohol ( chemist) to clean the rollers.

It may be that the tape you were trying to copy is deteriorating amd may clag up the works again.

Tape Transport issue

FF and Rewind are functions of the reels, not the capstans. If the reels fail to rotate in response to capstan-driven tape motion the unit will assume a broken tape or end of tape. I think you have a mechanical reel drive system failure. Take it to a shop for evaluation and correction.

Tape transport stuck in open position. Will not take tape into unit.

It could be possible that the tape is in the wrong way or that the tape is the wrong size those are both reasons that it may not be closing

Cassette Tape Deck Problem

Unit may have worn belts that are slipping. All cassette player belts are subject to deterioration even if recently installed. You may try ordering the belts yourself and have a service tech install them. The tech that installed belts 9 months ago may have used used belts. Although dishonest, it is common.

Caution light flashing on TR5 - Tape is good.

There may be several reasons for this, - the unit may not be pulling the tape through the transport mechanism because of tape binding in the cassette. Or there could be excessive oxides built up on the captstan. If you can, remove old tape and try a new one. In either case, you should get unit cleaned and checked by a qualified tech.

Error 01

Error code 01:
what to do:
open the tray, power down the unit, remove the top cover, remove the transport
(4 screws and a few conectors... I think there's a long 'transport load spring' also...)
then turn the transport over.
Looking at the bottom of the transport, there's a small, -no, make that tiny- black rubber drive belt
which goed from a very small pulley to a rather larger pulley directly next to it...
That's the one. Buy more than one replacement (they're only a buck or two) and put a new one on.
-then take the spare, and place it in a baggie and tape the baggie up inside the lid of the DA-30MkII...
Put some sort of friendly note in there for the next time the new owner of the machine needs to replace the belt.
