Question about LaCie External USB 2.0 500GB 7200 RPM 500 GB Hard Drive

Open Question

2 LaCie 500GB Hard Drives intermittently do not mount on desktop.

I purchased two 500GB LaCie Big Disk U2&F4&F8 EXTR 7200RPM 16MBUS external drives in November, 2006. I have connected them via Firewire 800 (daisy chain) to my PowerMac G5 tower running OSX 10.3.9. In February, 2007, one of them became defective and LaCie replaced it. I use them for external storage, with one mirroring the other. They power up when I start the computer and appear on the desktop. Recently, they both have had difficulty appearing on the desktop. Sometimes one or both will appear, and sometimes only one and sometimes neither appears. One drive seems to take longer than the other to spin up until the light stops flashing and that one seems the worst at appearing. I have tried checking all the connections, changing all the cables around, running Apple's Disk Utility as well as Disk Warrior, but nothing seems to make a difference. If I keep restarting one or both of them, eventually they will appear. The data on the drives is intact. Can you help me?

Please explain what you mean? When you plug in the drive it recognizes the drive but the size is showing to be extremely small?

Please let me know so I can help further.

Thanks!

Disassemble the case, and remove the disk-drive.
Attach it as a "slave" disk-drive in some desktop computer, and see if the desktop computer can "detect" the disk-drive, and if the files on the disk-drive are still accessible.

LaCie 500GB external will not show up on mac desktop. Blue light on, whirrs as if working but no icon on desktop (not mounted)

Did you format the drive using Disk Utility? Open "disk utility" from the dock icon or applications/utilities folder. Click the drive name on the left side of the disk utility window. click the "partition" tab in the window, next click the "options" tab and select GUID Partition scheme, or any Mac compatible scheme, read each explanation of the schemes. Name and resize your partitions, click apply. This is how it works running Leopard, not positive if the same applies to Tiger. I hope this helps you

Lacie 500gb external drive

The disks inside the HD are not spining. The creaking noise is the HD trying to start. Next time when it does start transfer all the files ASAP cause your drive is about to die.
