Question about Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-P52 Digital Camera

Lens cover opens only partially

When I turn on the camera, the lens cover opens only partially, and the message appears "turn power off and then on again", which I do, but to no avail. I also hear a whirring sound.

I'm having a problem with my Sony DSC-P52. The lens cover will neither open nor close. It is actually permanently in a partially-closed position whether the power is off or on. When I turn the power on, I hear a rapid signal and see the message "turn the power off and on again". I do this, but nothing happens.

  • cgsignorarch Nov 14, 2008

I tried canned air, but nothing happened. The problem doesn't seem to be related to particulate matter.

Prior to the lens cover refusing to move (its present condition), it would open partially, accompanied by a whirring sound.

  • cgsignorarch Nov 15, 2008

As per suggestion, I removed the batteries for 30 minutea and then replaced them. The lens cover still refused to move from its 3/4-closed position.

Is there some kind of miniature fuse related to the lens-cover motor drive that may have blown?

  • cgsignorarch Nov 16, 2008

It does not appear that a speck of dirt is the problem. The lens cover moves freely when I nudge it with my finger. But it always pops back to the partially-open position. The cover motor does not appear to be working. It is not responding when I turn the camera on.

  • cgsignorarch Nov 22, 2008

None of you "experts" seem to be getting this. The lens cover motor is not operating. The lens cover itself is permanently open at about i/4 of its normal full aperature. When the problem originally presented itself, I could hear the lens-cover motor whirring and the cover would open and close erratically. Now the cover just stays at the 1/4-open position and there is no sound of the motor trying to operate. I can of course move the two leaves of the lens cover with my fingers, but when released, they pop back to the same position mentioned above.

To resolve lens cover problem in your Sony DSC-P52 camera, you need to replace Front cabinet Assembly because lens cover is mounted in it and not available as individual part. Below is exploded view of your camera.

lens cover opens only partially - b814138.jpg

You can order Front Cabinet under following part number...

X-3953-322-1 CABINET (FRONT) ASSY

Above said part is available in Part Store.

Need further info, please let me know.

Hello, this problem is normally caused by dirt particles. It is recommended that you put it off and take out batteries before cleaning and wait a while before powering on. If cleaning does not work, then you could try new batteries.
If these does not work, then the device would have to be opened which will require a technician's helping hand. Have fun and Thanks for using fixya.

Hello cgsignorarch,

Your camera has a gear stucked.
When you turn it on, the lense has to come out. Inside of the camera there are gears witch make this possible (also when you zoom in and out).

If your lense do not come out what probbaly happend is that a gear got stuck or out of place. You can try to hit is gently untill the gear gets free of untill the pin"grabes" back the gear.

Try to turn it on several times tapping it. If that dosent work, you will have to open it up to fix the gear or take it to a sony repair shop where they will quickly solve your problem.

Good luck,
Dahaka

Hi,

Offhand, the solution offered by IrishDruid would come to mind. Alternately, you could also try checking the battery terminals. You may need to clean/scrape them and/or bend/stretch so as to provide more pressure to the battery contacts. In some instances, you could try Alkaline batteries and not rechargeable ones.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

It is worth to try this out in case of Jamming:

Just tap gently the camera but firmly against the palm of your hand. It usually works :)

You could also try twisting the lens in a clockwise fashion little bit, until it can go no further.

Hope it work, also try to remove all dirt and dust with a Blower or Vaccum cleaner.

Have a good luck,
Scott

Sounds old fashioned, but it works..Just tap the camera gently but firmly against the palm of your hand. It usually works :) You could also try twisting the lens in a clockwise fashion until it can go no further.

Should this fail, it would indicate a larger problem, either within the circuitry, or the gear mechanism, for which a service call will be required. You could try the "Repair Service" box at the right. Input your Zip code and get a list of repair centers in your area. Shop around for prices,a nd mention you were referred by Fixya. Who knows, you may just get a discount!

Cheers!

Just ON the camera the door will open half.at that time block the door with your hand.remove the battery from your another hand.then shut the door manually from you hand ---close ---open ---.
5 - 6 times.if it is working freely with your hand then again insert the battery and check.
if it not working properly manually then check out something is really blocking the door to open .as if the gears behind the doors which help the door to move freely gets stuck due to dust collected in between them and this happens.
also change the battery and check sometimes this really helps in such problems.
also tap the sides of the camera slowly not very hard but continuously for 2 minutes solves this problem for many persons getting such problem.

It is stuck because of dirt, dust, or because some part is slightly deformed or stuck.

Try gently helping the cover with your fingernail while you turn the camera on.

Be very careful, as there is always risk to damage the cover mechanism doing this DIY operation.

The safer alternative is taking the camera to a camera shop for repairs.

Dirt jamming the lens is eliminated, now we go inside to check the lens retraction gears. Got tools ? or opt for service. It's your option.

There's no fuse controlling the lens.

You can try pressing the sides of the lens cover to see if it snaps open.

if that doesn't help you will need to get it repaired, if you got warranty, take advantage of that if not.
You can get a free repair estimate from advance camera

Turn the power off and on again

Is it model with automatic cover of lens, like the DSC-T3 has? Problem is probably with lens cover. Try to move it (or help while it is trying to open/close) by your finger. It does sometimes if it is dirty (inside). I gues because you did not write the model name and number and on the picture is DSC-T1, but it has only 5.Mpix. If you have model with telescopic lens it is probably damaged gears of lens.

Keep getting ERR99 when i take my first shot after switching on.

ERR99 means the camera is not communicating with the lens - probably just dirty contacts.

To isolate the cause of the issue, do the following: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert only a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, the camera may be faulty and requires a service. If it does not, then: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, then the CF card is faulty. Try a different card. If the message does not appear: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the gold contacts on the lens by GENTLY rubbing them with a pencil eraser or soft cloth. Keeping the camera face pointing down, also clean the gold contacts on the camera, being careful that you do not let any debris fall into the camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

If the “ERR 99" message only appears when one particular lens is attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.
If you see the “ERR 99" with a different Canon lens attached, then the camera is faulty and should be serviced.

"Turn the power off and on again" error message

You probably have a defective lens assy. When turned on lens has to move to certain position but because of broken gear or some mechanical problem it can not perform that funtion. Remedy is to disassemble the lens assy and repair the problem. Many time the whole lens assy are replace to repair the problem. normal repair charges for this kind problem is $125-200 in US depending on parts use.

Camera powers up but lens cover fails to open

It could be some grit or sand causing the lens cover to not open, so the camera won't initialize. Try cutting a slip of paper narrow enough to slide between the lens opening frame and the lens cover. Move it in and out to clear any grit that might cause the spring-loaded cover to bind. Good luck !
