Question about Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) Slim (PSP-2000) Console

UMD on PSP Slim will not spin

My son dropped his PSP about 3 weeks ago. Broke the screen. I replaced the broken screen with a new one and everything was fine....
Last night he inserted a game (UMD) and it was not recognized. I couldn't hear the UMD spinning and yet everything else works fine ... access to memory card, internet, etc... just no SPINNING....

Ideas for diagnosing before I buy a new Laser assembly?????

That's what I thought ... but it's only about $30 ... short money considering a new PSP... one last question ... any cable (power in particular) that I could have possibly knocked loose during the screen replacement? Only saw two and they went to the display ... but .....

    thanks,

No i doubt the cables can stand a little bumpin without bein knocked loose, but the circuitry in such a small system might be delicate.

HMy brother just dropped My psp, and now the psp (Slim) will not spin the Disk (UMD). Any thoughts on how i can fix the Loader?

Check the sensors on the image at the following page. I suspect one or both was broken in the fall. We also do repairs of these sensors at the same website for $49.95 to replace one or both of the sensors.

when you say scanner do you mean laser that reads the umd?

you could replace the laser from one off ebay
but the thing with replacing lasers is that adjusting the laser so it reads the disk it tricky

here is a shop that repairs lasers in psps
http://www.ipaqrepair.co.uk/ipaqpart1418.html

or if you want to do it your self

your son probably dropped his PSP at the time and the UMD drive broke or if your son says he didnt drop it you can get a cutip and softly clean your UMD reader the little bubble sorta in your PSP be carful while doing that

PSP Problem

I dont know how technical savvy you are but there are several DIY guides on the internet to replace the UMD drive which often fails on the PSP.

Check out this website for a complete tutorial.

http://www.llamma.com/PSP/repair/PSP_UMD_Not_Reading_Discs.htm

you can find hte UMD parts on ebay usually as well

http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=psp+umd+drive&category0=

If not type in google psp repair.. there are plenty of place that do repairs.

Hi Voltagehog,

You need to look intothe UMD drive. Press the little Black probe sticking up in the UMD drive. It is about 3/4 inch from left and 3/4 inch from top of the UMD drive. When you press it, look for the Disc spindle to rotate, and the Laser to light up and the Laser movement to occur. This will tell you a lot in what is working or not in the UMD drive. If the laser does not move left and right, or light up, you have a problem with the laser. move it manually with a pen or something, Only click it a couple of times. Try the black button thing again. If the Disc spindle motor does not spin. You probably need a new UMD drive.
If you need a new UMD drive, click on "repair directory" at the bottom of this screen, Click on Video game Consoles. Pick out a good service out. I know one of them specializes in Playstations. You can get a new UMD drive replaced for under $60.

Sony PSP wont play umd

Same with my PSP. My son accidentally broken a spring sensor for the UMD when you close the UMD cover of the PSP. That's why the drive doesn't recognize if there's a UMD. Sony Service Center here in the Philippines doesn't have a replacement part for this.

if the psp screen is anything like a laptop it will have a backlight that lights up the screen what can happen is you can break the light and while you will still see things on the screen when you look closely but it wont be illuminated. i had a friend that dropped his laptop and smashed the backlight he sent it away and got it fixed i suggest you send it to sony to get it fixed
