Hello, i just bought a 1999 audi a6 quattro and it came with an aftermarket stereo in it but i still have another stereo from a previous car that i would like to put in it and eventually i want to hook up my subs in the trunk but i cant figure out how to get the dash/center console apart. my car has the wood protector that slides down in front of the stereo. the only part ive managed to take off is the top part that goes around the cupholder and hazard button. i cant get anymore of the dash apart though. if anyone has experience changing to an aftermarket stereo in this car or could help id appreciate it. THANKS. Oliver

3. Simplified method of clearing the security code
(K Type only)
1. While the code entry is requested, press and hold the
VOL UP key for 3 seconds while holding the DISP key
pressed. (This should turn "----" off.)
2. Enter "KCAR" from the remote. (Same way as the 01
model)
Press the 5 key on the remote twice, then press the
Track Up key. (This enters "K".)
Press the 2 key on the remote 3 times, then press
the Track Up key. (This enters "C".)
Press the 2 key on the remote once, then press the
Track Up key. (This enters "A".)
Press the 7 key on the remote twice, then press the
Track Up key. (This enters "R".)
3. The security code is cleared and the unit enters the
ALL OFF mode.
4. If you commit a mistake in the code entry, the unit
enters the code request mode again.
SOURCE: Problem with Kenwood x817 in my '95 audi A6
It sounds like the radio to me.
I work at a Kenwood authorized service center and have seen this problem many times. It is a common problem with this model and many other Kenwood models as well.
It has a ribbon cable that connects the display to the main board and they are almost always the cause of your problem.
The ribbon cable has a part number right on the cable in the skinny little area that laps over the connector that is on the main board of the radio.
the part number starts with either J84-xxx-xx or J86-xxx-xx
The "xxxx-xx" is the remainder of the part number. You can see what it is when you look at the cable. I just can't remember the entire part number right now without the service manual in front of me.
You can get that part at an authorized Kenwood repair center. If they don't have it in stock, they can order it for you. It cost around $20 to $30 depending on the shops mark-up of the part.
To replace that part you will also need to un-solder the metal connector that the face plate comes in contact with and solder it back on to the new cable.
You must also be careful taking apart the radio to repair it. Making sure that you don't force anything apart and causing more problems.
If you decide to do this yourself, let me know and I can give you some better instructions tomorrow when I have the service manual to look at.
It is reccomended that you let a proffesional do it for you.
The repair should not cost more than $100 for parts and labor. My shop would charge about $85.
I hope this helps you make an informed desicion on how to approach this problem.
I good rating is always appreciated for the help provided.
Thanks and good luck, just let me know if you need more help.
SOURCE: no sound from my front and back speakers in my van ive got subs
Make sure that when you hooked up your 4 channel amp to the remote turn on lead it is the same as the sub. Only hook amps to the Blue w/ white strip. The solid blue is power antenna lead and will lose power when on CD, ipod etc and only stays powered when the Tuner is on. Hope this fixes your problem.

Subwoofer output: Hold the (AM-) button down for at least two seconds. You can do this function when "SWPRE" in is set to . The SWPRE (Switching Preout) Switches the preout between rear output ("R") and subwoofer output ("SW").
