Question about PDAs

Post relates to: Zire 31 I think my problem might be on the user name. ???? When I try to Hotsync I get the small user name screen, click on my user name then the sync process stops and immediately kicks me back to the handheld which tells me "Hotsync opeations was interrupted. Some of your data was not backed up. For details, tap Hotsync log for details....". There are no details in the log as no processes have been carried out. I've done a hard reset and soft reset a number of times, tried to change Sync to Palm Desktop, then Sync to Outlook. The message is always the same. I've reset to Desktop overwrites handheld and installed the latest version of Palm software for Zire 31 from website. I've also tried to change the user name but the change refuses to stick. I have no user name on the handheld HotSync screen as I've done a Hard reset. This is what makes me feel the problem is on user name. I'm going around in circles on this one and am annoyed that I am probably missing something really obvious. Please tell me this is the case. Thanks, Chris

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling. The reason why I think it is user name problem is that I uninstall, close down the computer, start the computer again, install see previous post, but the user name is somehow already entered on the Palm software on my desktop. How, I don't know. Is there a folder somewhere outside of the Palm folder that has backup files???? Thanks for your help.

Backup your user data in the palm folder take a copy and past it somewhere else, uninstall your palm related software and reinstall them, restore your userdata if you have any and then perform the sync.

this information Im attaching should be helpfull to you

How do I upgrade from an old palm? handheld to a new model on a Windows® PC.

If upgrading to a new Palm? handheld from a previous model, there are a few steps you should take prior to performing the first HotSync® operation. Synchronizing the new handheld with a user name associated with a previous handheld model, may cause some third party applications to cease functioning correctly. To prevent this from occurring, you can either create a new Palm user name, or use an existing user name as long as you prevent the additional applications transferring to the new handheld. Instructions for each of these options are presented below.

Please note that we suggest you do not attempt to restore existing handheld data from a Secure Digital Card, or MultiMediaCard, as it may contain applications and settings that are incompatible with the new Palm handheld.

To verify the compatibility of third party applications, we suggest you contact the developer of such software.

Create a new Palm user profile on Windows® and manually transfer the existing user data.

· Launch the Palm Desktop software and select 'Edit Users' from the user pick list in the upper right of the screen.

· Click 'New' and enter the new user name.

· Click 'Done', 'OK' and then 'OK' once again.

· Exit the Palm Desktop software.

· Right click 'Start' on Windows and choose 'Explore'.

· Locate the Palm username folder in either of the following directories, C:\Palm\['username']\ or, C:\Programs Files\Palm\['username']\

· Copy and paste the following folders from the original user name folder to the new one:

· Address

· Datebook

· Expense

· Memopad

· Todo

· Note pad (if present)

Use an existing user profile on Windows, but prevent additional applications from transferring.

If you do not wish to create a new user profile, there are a few steps you must follow to ensure that incompatible data or settings are not transferred during the first HotSync operation.

· Backup your existing Palm Desktop information to prevent possible data loss.

· Right click 'Start' on Windows and choose 'Explore'.

· On the 'Windows Explorer' go to the following directory, C:\Palm\['username']\Backup, or C:\Program Files\Palm\['username']\Backup

· This folder contains additional applications loaded onto your handheld, so, to prevent these from being loaded onto the new Palm handheld during the first HotSync, right click on the folder and choose 'Cut', close the 'Windows Explorer' and 'Paste' the 'Backup' folder elsewhere. For example, onto the 'Windows Desktop'.

· You can now HotSync your new handheld model.

· Upon completion of the HotSync, you will required to perform an on-screen reset.

· When the reset is complete, tap the 'Done' button, then the 'Home' button to return to the 'Application Launcher'.

Hot sync calendar from outlook to my palm

In my LifeDrive, my VersaMail set-up wasn't quite right. I had my e-mail address in as "name", rather than "name@mail.com". That fixed MY problem. Others (including me) are having trouble keeping the HotSync set to sync Calendar. It keeps going back to "Do Nothing" Go to HotSync in the system tray on your PC, right click, select Custom and see if your Calendar (conduit) is set to 'Do Nothing' as an action. I was able to get it to change and work, but just once (so far!!)

Can't synch Outlook Calendar Appointments

Try uninstalling with Windows Uninstall Clean-up tool. XP seems to do a poor job of installing conduits sometimes. I think this might be an issue with the one conduit no being registered correctly in the Windows Registry. You can get this tool here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301 Uninstall Palm Desktop. Then shut down the PC. Then start it up again and re-install Palm Desktop. I hope this helps.

How do I activate my handheld for a specific user account?

Definitely something to address with Audible Digital Rights Management of Audible files is controlled and managed by Audible. In general the way these schemes work is to write some kind of key or token file to your handheld when you first setup your Audble account. Unless the keyfile is present, the player will give you the response you mentioned. With Audible, you can move the authorization from one device to another by deactivating one device and activating another. In your case, you seem to have deactivated your Zire 31 somehow. I suspect that you may have put a new user on the Zire 31 and therefore the DRM keyfile is no longer part of your files on the Zire. It would be associated with the old username and no longer on your handheld. I suspect what you have to do is re-authorize your Zire 31 using the Audible Manager on the PC.

How do I NOT HotSync with Outlook?

Insert the installation CD and select Change your synchronization method. If that doesn't work, or the option is not available, in Windows, click Start>Run then D:\English\PostInstall\OutlookSwitcher.exe /palm (where D: is your CD drive AND your install CD is inserted; also check to make sure the file is at that location).

Zire 72 and Outlook 2003 - I think I've tried it all! Doesn't work....

you don't need pocketmirror for zire 72 because palm desktop have outlook conduits to handle outlook synching. inorder for you to sync using outlook you must have the outlook conduits installed which seems you have it already installed. you have to disable some older conduits inorder to avoid conflicts with the conduits. to do these follow these steps: 1. right click on the hotsync manager icon on your system tray 2. click on Custom... 3. select Date Book (Outlook) 4. click on Change... 5. select Do Nothing and set it to default 6. click Ok 7. repeats steps 3-6 for Address Book (Outlook), To Do List (Outlook) and Memo Pad (Outlook)
