This sounds mechanical in nature; i suggest taking it to a qualified repairman.
you may want to look inside and see if there is anything obvious jamming any mechanism...

Upon completion of OCR scanning, why does the printer make a grinding noise?

When you scan the document, the laser module moves on from the start point of the location to the end point of the location boundary for scanning the document and then it comes back to the initial position to the start point, so while moving the laser module it makes some sound. Still it is advised to take the printer to the nearest Canon Service Center to check if it requires any servicing. Please find the link below:

The scanner works but makes a grinding noise that is getting worse

Normally Canon scanners work well for long time, Change the pickup rollers for every 250,000 pages and check other rollers for every 500,000 pages. In case you have been scanning documents with quite a good amount of dust, you may need to check at an earlier interval. Replace any worn out roller. Check if the small bearings at the end of each roller is perfect. Clean thoroughly all the rollers, dont use solvents. S. Mohan, Chenna, India

Need the adjustment sheet to calibrate my canon dr3080cii, where can I download?

I'm sure the adjustment sheet is printed when you do a print test with the Canon control program, look in the windows programs menu for the Canon group and you should find the right program to run.

The most common problem is that the pulley breaks, you might be able to see it through the glass. looks where the belt goes, and see if the pulley is broken.

also, some people forget to unlock the locking mechanism when the unit gets moved, the locking switch is on the side.

Grinding noise

There is usually a slide type button somewhere around the outside of the scanner and it usually has a lock & unlock sybol on it. You may want to make sure that it is slid totally in the unlock position because it could be getting caught inside once in a while if the button is say half way between lock and unlock... Hope this helps...
