E18 error on Canon ixus40 - lens stuck

Hello,
My daughters camera Canon IXUS40 is getting the E18 error .The lens was open , and it it would not close and the E18 error was showing up, I gently pressed the lens down until it had clicked close, I though this would solve the issue , now it will not open and the error E18 stills shows up when power up and shuts off shortly after.
Is there a fix to this problem?
Thank you!
Richard

The E18 error is an error message on Canon digital cameras. The E18 error occurs when anything prevents the zoom lens from properly extending or retracting.[1] The error has become notorious in the Canon user community as it can completely disable the camera, requiring expensive repairs.
A quick internet search for "E18" + "canon" quickly reveals hundreds of similar complaints.
ConsumerAffairs.com reports that the "lens has a feature called bellows claw, which is a gear that physically extends and retracts the lens. A piece that holds the lens, the barrier plate, is not large enough and can sometimes cause the bellows claw to malfunction, resulting in a stuck lens". The result is a black screen that only contains the error message, E18. Another problem mentioned on the site blames a sticky iris in the lens, caused by grease entering inside from the microphones built into the lens. The buildup freezes up the ability of the lens to open.

The IXUS 40 is called the SD300 in some parts of the world. If you feel confident about doing the replacement yourself, you can order the part from

What does E18 mean?

Canon E18 error happens when the lens gets stuck while trying to extend. The camera will beep a few times and the LCD will display a little E18 in the lower-left corner. The lens gets stuck in the extended position, and refuses to move either to focus the lens or to retract when powered off. This is caused by dirt in between the telescoping portions of the lens. You can clean this with compressed air, generally. Blow air all around the turret sections of the lens. you can also GENTLY push the lens inward ( have the lens extended and take the battery out... then push inward...)

Date display in photos in IXUS40

here is the solution:
The date and time can be included on the pictures taken only with the camera in postcard mode. You must also activate the date stamp option in the menu.
To set the camera into postcard mode, press the [Func.] button on the camera, then use the [arrow down] key to go down to the last option in the menu, and there you can choose the [Postcard mode]. Press [Func.] again to exit the function menu.

To set the date and time stamp, press the [Menu] button and then use the [arrow down] button to go to the [Date stamp] option in the menu. You can set this to "Date" or "Date & Time". Press the [Menu] button again to exit the menu.

your date and time are set now

Camera got stuck

Hello there,
The E18 error is related to the LENS not able to retract fully. If it is still under warranty, I would advise you bring it to the nearest service center. This is to avoid further damages. Otherwise, you can try a few things below.
There are a couple of things you can do.
1. Turn it on and then off. Spray canned air around the lens.
If trick 1 will not work out, try this.
2. Make sure the battery is fully charged. Turn on the camera and then give it a couple of firm whacks on the side. Make sure nothing is blocking the lens and wait for it to fully retract.
Let me know how it goes.

E18 error on canon digital camera s200 powershot dropped it and now the lens is stuck halfway out/in The lens will not open, it was not dropped. I get e18 error.

Canon Powershot's error E18 has to do with the lens:
If it appears on a black LCD with E18 written on the corner, it is mostly due to the lens getting stuck while trying to extend. The camera will beep a few times and the LCD will display a little E18 in the lower-left corner. The lens gets stuck in the extended position, and refuses to move either to focus the lens or to retract when powered off.
I am giving below a link which will help you with E18 problem.

http://www.e18error.com/repair.html

Hope this helps, let me know if you have a proble.

You can Try the following also;
Remove the batteries from the camera, wait a few minutes. Put a fully charged batteries back in and turn the camera on. if it doesnot work then,

2: Remove the batteries again, as also remove the memory card. Then install the newly charged batteries, when you turn it on it should come back to life.
3: Insert the cameras Audio/Video (AV) cable, and turn the camera on. Inserting this cable ensures that the camera's LCD screen remains off during the start process. Thus extra battery power is available to the camera's lens motor during start up. This extra power can be useful to overcome any grit or sand particles that may be jamming the lens.
4: Place the camera flat on its back on a table, pointed at the ceiling. Press and hold the shutter button down, and at the same time press the power-on button. The idea is that the camera will try to autofocus while the lens is extending, hopefully seating the lens barrel guide pins in their slots.

Try the above and let me if its any help.
Please do rate and thanks for using FixYa and Best fo luck to get you camera out of E18!

Lens is jamed

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

Not quite sure where you are having the problem with your camera, but there are several places on the internet that can help fix your camera and/or lens.

Here is one listing I found on eBay for you - http://cgi.ebay.com/Canon-SD500-Camera-LENS-BARRIER-SHUTTER-FLAPS-REPAIR_W0QQitemZ260164183646QQihZ016QQcategoryZ64352QQcmdZViewItem

Canon IXUS40, rubber(?) seal between lens rings & body keeps popping out

It can be replaced, but requires removing the front face of the camera. Here's an example disassembly. Proceed no further than removing the front face to install the seal:

Not sure where you could find a replacement other than from another (broken) camera. The seal is mainly intended to minimize sand and grit from entering the camera, but is not necessary for operation of the camera.

SD Card capacity and make problem with IXUS40/SD300

Basally, you are not limited with the SD card capacity. It is an "economic" decision only. Sandisk is one of the best companies for it.
