Any idea why the USB mouse isn't detected? Is it a Special series of mouse needing software?
Does the laptop have a PS/2 connector, so you can try using an old PS/2 mouse and try with that?

Maybe with some short-keys (like Alt-Esc for the windows Start button), you can reach the software or config application that you used to disable the mousepad...

Try that one, and see if it helps you...

a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US.

I have an IBM ThinkPad T42 and until a few minutes ago my touch pad was working with no problems. I installed a wireless mouse and that works fine. But I cannot control the cursor with the touch pad or red...

Try going to Start>Control Panel>Printer and other Hardware and look for mouse pad or something like that. I think the problem is that you can only use either the mouse pad or the mouse, can't use them both at the same time.

The usb do not work at all. ibm t42 23731WU many thanks !

If none of the usb ports are recognizing anything you hook up to them then that means the motherboard is bad. Easiest way to know, hook up a usb mouse or usb keyboard, those it should detect and install.

If it can't do that then you know for sure the motherboard is bad. If it does detect the keyboard and mouse then you know its the other devices that your hooking up that are faulty.

Touch pad not working

Go to Control Panel > Mouse then click on Device Settings and in the window should be the touchpad listed, under enabled does it say yes or no. If it says no then the enabled button underneath should be available.

Disabled Touchpad

connect a usb or ps2 mouse to it and re enable it either through device manager or re install the driver for the touchpad ( get the newest driver from IBM's website )
That or you may be able to re enable it through the utility that sometimes is in the system tray.

Thinkpad T42 Hard Disk problem

It seems the hard disk size will max out at 80GB with a 5,400 RPM speed according to IBM.

Im sorry to say that this means that it will not support a 120Gb hard drive.
