iPod's battery doesn't chargeSeveral things could keep your iPod's battery from charging. The major causes are listed below in logical order. Check each one to see if it's what's keeping your battery from charging.
Low-powered USB portiPods that connect to USB ports require a high-power USB port. Keyboards and some USB hubs will not charge iPod. Connect iPod directly to the computer or to a USB AC power adapter. Click here for more information.
Connect directly to computerIf you connect iPod to something that connects to the computer (like a USB hub or FireWire drive), connect iPod directly to the USB or FireWire port on the computer.
FireWire port on a Windows PCThe FireWire (IEEE 1394) ports on some Windows-compatible computers may not be powered, and consequently won't charge iPod when you plug it in. Check here to see if the FireWire port on your PC can charge iPod.
Your computer goes to sleepYour computer can only charge iPod when it's turned on and not asleep. Make sure your computer is on and not set to go to sleep when you want to charge iPod. Tip: Some Macintosh computers can charge iPod even though they're asleep. If your sleeping computer doesn't charge iPod, don't worry, just wake it and let iPod charge.
You are using Windows 2000If you use your iPod with a computer using Windows 2000, see document 304801 "iPod: Proper charging procedures for Windows 2000" for steps on how to keep iPod charging.

Hello,
First, please check your connection (I'm sure you have already done this). Make sure that the cable is plugged in and working on both ends.
If that is fine, I would recommend taking it back and getting a new one. If you just recently purchased it, you should be able to return without a problem. It sounds like you might have a defective product and you don't want to get stuck with it after the return period.
Good news is that when you get the new one, if you use iTunes, it will automatically sync up and you wont have to manually load songs.
Hope this was helpful but if you still have questions, let me know.
Have a great day

What type of IPod is this? Also what type of charger are you using? If the ipod does not have a charge at all you will need to plug it into a wall charger for it to get a "Base charge" (this usually takes 5-10 minutes) as if the ipod is totally dead then there is not enough of a charge for the ipod to let your computer know it is there to start being charged. After it has the base charge you can use the usb connection to finish the charge or leave it plugged into the wall charger to finish getting the charge.

The 5th Generation iPod (iPod video) were made and sold in 2005. Batteries inside iPods tend to last 2 to 3 years (4 if you hardly use them). It could be time to replace the battery inside your iPod.

You need a new battery. They are fairly simple to replace and can be purchased for a reasonable price on eBay.

60 GB iPod won't recharge

probably, when you replaced the battery, you didn't properly inserted its contact to the board connector, so just open the ipod again and re-install it, make sure it's all the way down into connector

Firstly, I'd try resetting your ipod. As with all clickwheel iPods, you can reset it by first toggling the hold switch on and off and then pressing the select (center) and menu buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds. When it's turned back on it will show the apple image for a few seconds and then continue. (Note, this does not delete your music) I have heard of other cases where lockups can be solved by either charging the battery, or if the battery is already charged, letting it drain the power, then connecting it back to your computer. (I am not certain the reason this fix works, but it has been confirmed on more than one occasion.)
