The latches on the inside of the microwave that hold the door closed, popped off and we can not figure out how to place the metal spring back on the plastic piece to get it to rotate when the door is open or closed. Any idea where I can get a diagram to show how the pieces are put together on the inside? The microwave will not work because the door will not securely close.
I assume you're talking about the spring that keeps tension on the door hooks (latch heads, as they're called by Sharp). When you shut the door, the "hooks" are held down by this spring to actuate the door switches. To fix this, you'll have to separate the door panels. You can download the service manual from my Web site. There's a loop built into the latch head assembly and sometimes the loop breaks. If so, you can drill a tiny hold in it and reattach the spring there. There may also be a loop on the innner door panel to hold the spring. That one can break, too. If it's broken, you'll have to find a way to secure the spring to the panel. If the panel material is thick enough, a tiny screw eye could be inserted, then epoxied overnight to secure it. I've attached a diagram to this message that should help you. If that doesn't help you, I have the service manual for the R1600-series microwaves on my Web site at: http://www.microwavedisplay.com/R1610.pdf Repost if you need more help.
My picture got scrunched. You can see it full-size here:

See if i do that i wont work i need something that would work...
Thanks so much for the info. I have a Samsung OTR microwave (smh8187stg) that had the same problem. It would only close most of the way but not all of the way and the unit wouldn't work unless you held the door closed. With this model you just pop a plastic cover off to access the latch. Very easy. The door hook was broken but the latch hook was ok. I was able to attach the spring to a square hole on a metal piece which lined the latch. All is well with the door now. I had also burnt out the fuses (possibly by slamming the door too hard too many times) so I replaced both of them - they were side by side. $5.00 later once again have a functioning microwave and even better - a fan which we can use while cooking. Thanks again!!!
I have the same problem. I figured same wrong with a srping inside. But I couldn't find the service manual you mentioned. Thanks!

Normally the problem is not the spring, but a broken
spring mounting tab on the door latch head (hook) assembly or the inner
door panel.
If it's the door panel, it's usually easier and cheaper to use epoxy and some kind of hardware to fashion a new spring mount.
The door latch head (hook) is easy to replace or repair if that's the issue.
We have the service manual for this model and have uploaded it to our site here to help you. You will need the free Adobe Reader to view or print it.
Normally
you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the manual)
and then you'll see the screws you need to remove.
Or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I made) here that demonstrates how it's done.
The best place to order Sharp parts is Tritronics.

SOURCE: How to install latch and spring in microwave door
You need to know where the 'catches' are inside the choke cover on the door to remove it carefully without breaking anything or marring the cover. You might get inside and find that the post for mounting the return spring has broken and that is part of the outer door panel.

I just had this issue happen to me last week.. fortunately I was standing in my kitchen when it happened... I heard a snap and then a piece fall down the inside of either the door or the front key panel.. I'm assuming this controlled the door locking/oven turning on safety mechanism. The inside light wont go off and it won't turn on to cook.. I am trying to figure out if it's worth paying to fix or just replace the whole unit!? Anyone know if this is fixable by oneself rather than spend a bunch of money on a service technician??
If the microwave door won't open the open lever might be broken. This part can be replaced separately.

If the microwave door won't open the door spring may have broken. The door spring is located inside the door and keeps downward pressure on the door hook.

If the microwave door won't open the door latch might be broken. The door latch is inside the microwave. The door hook, which is part of the door, engages with the latch to keep the door closed during operation. If the door latch or actuator breaks the door may not open.

If the microwave door won't open the door hook might not be releasing properly. The door hook is installed inside the door and normally releases when the door is opened. The hook is made of plastic and will break over time. When this happens it will need to be replaced, it can't be repaired.

If the microwave door won't open the button spring might be broken internally. The button spring can be replaced.

If the microwave door won't open the handle actuator might be broken. This is a plastic part which can become brittle over time. This part is connected between the door button and the door latch assembly.

door will close then pop back open. It has to be forced shut
The door latch is not working... Managed to remove the inside door but the spring is no longer attached. Are there any diagrams for this model?
Even though this is late in the game (2019), I just fixed my floppy door latch in an easier way. As noted, the spring's anchor point that holds the latch down is a plastic post and these break over time. When I removed the inner door cover(Sharp calls it the choke), about 4 of these post fell out. Instead of replacing the post, I filed a very small notch in one of the screen frame tab (metal tabs that stick out all around the inner protective screen), at an appropriate distance below the spring to give it tension, attached the loose end of the spring and viola! Fixed. This little mod will not affect micro radiation safety since nothing is being removed or changed.
