You need to add a controller card for SATA. These are not expensive. One you might consider is this:

Vantec UGT-ST200 Serial ATA PCI Host Card

It costs about $25, and is available many places, including Tiger Direct, Fry's Electronics, and others. Here is a link to one on the Fry's website. Shop around, you might even find it somewhere else cheaper:

Once you install the card in an empty PCI slot, you install a new SATA hard drive, and cable it to it. It should work fine with your existing PATA drive(s).

why are you using XP is it 32bit or 64? ill answer for 32..
its a dead OS,totally dead, and virus magnet and the MS PnP severs are shut down.
XP also MUST have the SP3 installed or the THING cant find any modern, SATA chips and many other devices.
im looking at your MOBO now,
it has 4 sata jacks
1 floppy
and 1 IDE jack let me guess this is what Drive one, IDE (pata)
is plugged in , then you add a new sata drive to the old sata ports
and XP pukesssss, as all XP does (cept mine)

SSDD. Same stuff different day,
so you can either use w7 like all savvy folks do
or find the driver missing that MS cant find, XP is dead.
but wait XP needs a Floppy drive to load the correct driver.
but if XP is running now, we dont need that only on XP installs.
ive no idea on what sata chip is there, in our shop
we scan it to find that and HP does not tell this.
Pentium D processor
Intel 945G Express
i think this is it , the 945G
load this driver from HP

Will Intel DG31PR supports SATA-2 or SATA-3 format internal drives?

The Intel DG31PR motherboard uses an Intel G31 motherboard chipset;

A) Intel 82G31 - Northbridge chip
B) Intel 82801GB (ICH7) - Southbridge chip

Scroll down to the subheading - G31 in the left column.

The Southbridge chip controls the SATA bus.
The SATA bus uses SATA technology, that operates UP TO 3Gbps.
3 Gigabits per second.

The SATA 3.0 technology operates at 6Gbps.
6 Gigabits per second.

SATA revisions were made to be both Backward Compatible, and Forward Compatible.

However it depends on the manufacturer of the harddrive, as to how to switch it,

The answer is yes.
You will not get the full capability of the SATA 3.0 technology, however.
The harddrive will be operating at the SATA 1.5 technology.

Need to add SATA controller driver

Hi voyager99,
You can download the driver, (VIA 8237 SATA/RAID driver) from PC Chips but I doupt it will help.
If your bios did no see the 250GB drive than the onboard SATA controller is defective. This can not be fixed.
Running the SATA/RAID driver will most likely not help the bios see your drive.
Buying a PCI serial SATA controller card may allow your SATA drive run but it will run at the PCI bus speed. A decent controll card may cost as much as a new board that will run your current devices.

Good luck!
