Brother CS-8150 Won't Work in Reverse

My Brother CS-8150 sewing machine seems to work fine when sewing in the forward direction, but will not sew stitches in reverse. When I step on the presser foot or manually turn the wheel, the needle will move up and down but the fabric does not move. As a result, the thread gathers all in the one spot where the needle is moving up and down. Nothing seems to be broken or stuck, so I can't figure it out.

The machine is struggling to turn. The needle doesn't work. The motor works. No parts seems to be broken. No cloth seems to be stuck... What is the problem?

When did you have your machine serviced the last time? servicing it yourself is ok if you don't have an available service shop. It could need cleaning and lubricating. Use only sewing machine oil, never 3 in one oil... you may use tri flow as well. the lubricants can dry out, and will gradually more and more prevent sewing other than straight. just a thought.

Look at the feed dogs under the foot see if they are raised high enough to pull the material through.

The problem on my wifes CS-8150 was in the button assembly.

First : Establish that there is no obstruction/ debris to prevent the reversing arm from functioning by visual inspection of the reversing armature in the base of the machine. Procedure is detailed in cleaning the lower bobbin area.

Second: Then perform a function test to establish that the reversing motor is not damaged.
Set machine in an automatic reversing stitch mode. I recommend a Decorative stitch or a Buttonhole stitch. Place proper foot on the machine and initiate the stitch.
If it performs correctly and the stitch is correct then the motor and reverse functionality is correct.

At this point the reverse button or electronic switch in button area is indicated.

I did not open the case for fear of breaking the plastic housing of the machine so instead resorted to the old well placed taps method. I pressed the reverse button twice, it seemed to click properly. I then rapped with moderate force with my index finger in the area above and slightly to the left of the button.

    Worked like a champ!

I suspect that had I opened the case I would have discovered that the actuating pin which translates the depressed button force to the electronic switch on the "motherboard" board would have been out of position or possibly blocked by some thread debris.

Bottom thread from theh bobbin is in big loops.

Problem with Brother CS-8150 Computerized Sewing Machine
bottom thread from theh bobbin is in big loops.

I have a CS-8150 as well -it was fine until I decided to clean the shuttlecock and I thought I had put it back correctly. However, it was after replacing the shuttlecock in place that my bobbin thread was making big loops and no matter what tension it kept doing it. So I removed everything out of the bobbin area. Cleaned and made sure that the shuttlecock was exactly in place as per the manual. Guess what it does not make big loops any more.
Just a suggestion.

Manuals for Brother machines are usually available from the Brother site.
They have one for the CS-8150 but I'm not sure if this is your machine or if the model number is UL273C.
The manual for the CS-8150 is here:
The manual for ULT2001 is here:
Maybe one of them is similar enough to your machine.

My bobbin winder stopped working on my Brother CS-8150. spindle locks in, motor runs, but it seems that the winder is slipping. Can this be adjusted?

I think that I would call Brother at 1-877-276-8437 and ask them if this is a warranty issue. They may have a quick fix for you.

Brother CS-8150 Problems with bobbin thread

Double check to see if the bobbin is in upside down and the thread is feeding from the bobbin spool in the wrong direction.

I did this once after several years using the same machine, some days are just not as easy as they should be!

I need to know how to change the bulb on a brother ps 33 sewing machine!

Hi, thank you for using FixYa! I don't see a model PS-33, however; you posted in the CS-8150 machine section, the link to the manual for a CS-8150 machine is attached. It has a section for winding and installing the bobbin and another section for upper threading. If your machine is not the CS-8150, please comment with the correct model number (PS machines start at number 1450 and increment upwards). If this is the correct manual, would you please take minute to rate this solution? Thank you! Gregg
