Question about Panasonic PT-53WX53 53" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

PT 53WX53 lost convergenge on right side of TV blue shifted left

While watching TV the other day, the right half of my TV had the blue shift to the left. I went in to adjust convergence and found that I was only able to adjust the left and center points on the TV and not the 3 points to the far right. The blue just won't go far enough to the right to align now. After some searches on the internet and other writeups here, I am ordering STK392-110 (2) and will try a replace to see if it works. If anyone knows of another reason this could be happening on only the right half, I would love to hear your thoughts. I will post back after the repair and give results.
Thanks....

    William,

Thanks for the advice. I started the repair and on 6th pin didn't have solder hot enough I guess, so ended up pulling off most of the pin pad on board. Thought it was trashed at that point, so packed it up and stuck in garage. Bought a new TV and then decided to try the rest of the repair since nothing to loose. Got the rest of pins cut and out of board, unfortunately nicked coating on 2 resistors near amps. Put everything back together and after making some convergence adjustments have a relatively new TV again - makes for a nice spare room TV as I am not sure how long the patch to pin pad area and nicked resistors will last in unit.

Thanks to FIXYA, I was able to replace both amps (used -150 series), including purchase of new solder iron and other consumables, service manual (just in case) for under $70.

Scinaz,
Make sure you order genuine Sanyo replacements, there are a lot of fakes out there that will short in less than an hour in that unit... You can use stk392-150 or 180's also, same chip-set just greater amp rating. You're replacing Ic's 7001 & 7002...
Use a generous portion of heat sink compound as well and don't let your solder pen sit for any length of time on any one pin. You might also solder a couple of pins and pause to let heat dissipate before continuing...
Best place for ordering those amps is ACME sales in Florida...
Lastly, you might check the ohms rating of the 1w resistors out in front of the amps. Those are your yoke return resistors and change any that are out of value by more than 10%...
Good Luck!

Great, glad to hear you got it.. Nicking the coating on a resistor isn't too bad maybe you need a bit more defined soldering stick.

Removing or lifting some of the foil isn't a too bad - most of us simply make a fine wire connection between what's left and the component. You need to scratch off the coating on the surface of the foil to get a good solder point but it's just as reliable if it's done right.

    Take Care!

Pt-53wx53 Panasonic Projection TV Turns off

OK< likely one of the new chips are bad or when soldered in you shorted pins at that time----3 blinks is short protection and you are going to find ONE of the light blue 2.2 ohm resistors is open (usually discolored in middle).

Having changed hundreds of chips in this model once in a while you get a new one that is bad---replace both again.

How did you get at them----remove the board or pull the light box?

In your settings menu there should be an option for it to self adjust or manual adjust of the red and green images alignment.

If your model number is the PT53WX53 its a rear projection CRT television not a DLP. The PT53WS53 uses two STK392-110 convergence ICs. If you verify the model number of your set I can assist you.

Replace Ic7001 and Ic7002 the convergence amps in this unit. Both are STK392-110 Sanyo built Ic's and fairly inexpensive. If you're not at all sure how to replace these take it to a qualified shop. And when you're calling around shopping ask what they charge to replace the convergence amps in these units.
Also take the unit to them rather than pay the pickup and delivery charge, that will save a few bucks.
Have a great day!
