Dv1000 power problem

Screen was blinking between bright and dim. i switched AC adapters, problem persisted. battery discharged. notebook will not power up now, with or without battery present. hp tech says it's the motherboard but everything worked until the adapter would no longer get current inside the box. battery drained due to no AC current; there's nothing wrong with battery.

1. can AC adapter port be fixed without replacing motherboard?
2. hp says they can replace motherboard for $398 including shipping; buying the motherboard costs $388 from them; i think this smells.
3. hp wants me to agree to letting them diagnose other things; i don't trust them not to perform unneeded work.

what can i do here?

Hi,

This is a common problem we faced especially for home users. The problem is really simple: The power adapter socket on your laptop's motherboard is broken. Assuming that the system board is not broken or cracked, this broken socket can be easily replaced. And it only costs $2!

Unfortunately, it is common policy for service centers nowadays to replace the board for this type of problem, thats why they are charging $398, which is actually a good price.

If you have any basic electronic background, then you can replace it yourself. The main hurdle you will face is in finding the exact dc socket and disassembly and assembly of your notebook. Just remove and replace the defective socket from the mainboard. Otherwise you can put external connector on it. It might not look good, but you do have a working laptop now.

Regards

1. Disconnect the AC power adapter cord, remove the battery, and hold the Power button for 30 seconds. This will discharge the notebooks system capacitors.
2. Connect the AC adapter to a working power outlet or surge protector and connect it to the notebook.
3. Press the Power button to turn on the notebook.

If that did not help, go to the HP Customer support and search for Troubleshooting Battery Power

Restart the notebook, press F10 and check if you see the BIOS screen or not.
If you see the BIOS screen and if the notebook does not restart in BIOS then this could not be a hardware issue.
But if you do not see the BIOS screen, then perform the steps below :
1. Disconnect the ac adapter and remove the battery from the notebook.
2. press and hold the power button for 30 seconds
3. replace the battery and connect the ac adapter
4. turn On the notebook and check
If the issue persists then remove and replace the memory modules of the notebook and check it.
If the issue still persists then it could be a hardware issue and your notebook needs to be serviced.

It wont turn on whether its plugged in or not....

This issue could be due to presence of static charges or internal hardware malfunction of the notebook. To isolate the exact cause of the issue, perform the following steps.

Step 1: Hard Reset

To perform a hard reset, please follow the steps listed below:

1. Unplug the AC adapter from the notebook PC and remove from any port replicator or docking station.
2. Remove the battery from the notebook battery compartment.
3. Press and hold down the power button for about 20 seconds.
4. Insert the battery and plug the AC adapter back into the notebook PC.
5. Press the power button to turn the notebook PC back on.

This will discharge the static charges from the notebook. Now check for the issue. If the issue persists, then remove and reseat the memory modules of the notebook.

Step 2: Remove and reseat memory modules

You can refer the service manual provided below for information to remove and reseat the memory modules.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00444244.pdf

Refer page no: 121, 122 & 123
NOTE: PDF manuals require the Adobe Acrobat Reader for viewing and printing.
However, if the issue still persists, then it is clear that the issue is due to internal hardware malfunction of the notebook and requires a detailed onsite diagnosis by a service technician. At this point, I would recommend you to take the notebook to a nearest Computer Service Center to get it repaired/serviced. I hope the information provided would be helpful.

HP DV1000 screen too dim

The 4 most common problems with dim lcd's on a laptop are boken screens, bad power inverter, bad florescent bulbs or a broken cable.

You can test the power inverter with a meter.

There should be 2 bulbs. If your screen is dim and your inverter is good and you can still make out what is on the screen, you probably have a bad bulb. If you can't determine which bulb is bad you'll have to replace both.

In my opinion, the easiest way to handle this is to replace the whole screen. Yes, it's more exspensive, but consider that it is most likely to fix your problem. A replacement screen comes with the power inverter, both bulbs, and the cable; already assembled and ready to install.

My HP dv1000 does not start. I checked both adapter and battery ( new ones), but still the problem persists. And the adapter makes a beep sound 2/sec, doens anybody know what it means. Please help me out.

i don't think it's your adapter which beeps, beep indicates Ram problem, does your laptop power on? if it does power on and you don't see anything on the screen then it is because of RAM. Try switching ram to other slot, or get a new ram.

Screen dim HP pavilion dv1000

The lid actuator switch may not be working correctly. It's a small switch above the keyboard and led's on either the right or left side. Try pressing it 2 or 3 times to see if the display starts working correctly again. If so, it will need to be replaced.

If that doesn't work, you can also turn it on with the ac adapter plugged in. After it boots, press the power button and hold it in until it shuts off and then turn it on again and see if the display has returned to normal.

If neither of these options work, your laptop may need to have the backlight replaced.

HP dv1000 monitor just stopped working.

Description During the startup or boot process of the notebook, the display is very dim and barely readable. It remains dim when it reaches the Windows desktop. Restart the notebook with AC power Perform the following steps to determine if the dim display is due to a hardware failure:
  1. Connect the AC adapter to the notebook and a working electrical outlet.
  2. Power down the notebook PC by pressing and holding the Power button for 5 seconds.
  3. Press the Power button again to start the computer.
If the display is still dim after restarting with the AC adapter connected try changing the LCD brightness. Change the LCD brightness From the Windows desktop, hold the Fn key and press the F7 and F8 keys to increase or decrease the brightness of the display. If using the function keys does not resolve the problem, determine whether the Lid Actuator switch is stuck. NOTE: The key number may vary depending on the notebook PC. The image on the key should resemble the following images: Figure 1: Brightness Level Down c00776225.jpg Figure 2: Brightness Level Up c00776226.jpg NOTE: During battery power operation, the notebook display will dim to reserve battery power. Adjust brightness control using the control panel Some notebook PCs have the ability to adjust the brightness through video drivers. If the notebook PC has video drivers with this capability, perform the following steps:
  1. Click Start , Control Panel and then double click Display .
  2. Select the Settings tab and click Advanced .
  3. If the feature is available, a tab with the video card name will be present. If it is, select that tab.
  4. Adjust the desired brightness.
Finding the Lid Actuator switch The Lid Actuator switch is a small button or switch located above the keyboard and LEDs on the right or left side of the notebook. It may also be located near the display hinges. Pressing this switch when the computer is on may turn the notebook display off or cause the notebook to enter a different power state. Press the switch 2-3 times while observing the display. If the display is no longer dim the switch may need to be repaired. Contact HP service and support for further assistance. Contact HP service and support If the display remains dim after the troubleshooting in this document it may be possible that the backlight is damaged. Please Contact HP service and support to schedule a repair
