Had similar problem with a ge fridge. remove the back panel if you can and clean out the dust and dirt. this may help, if not, your fridge may need a part such as a component board that controls the defrost cycle. that's what i had to do with my ge, it cost about $150 but i had some other work done as well. it sucks but it's a lot cheaper than a new fridge. good luck.

My amana fridge model number Arb1914cw isn't cooling but the freezer is working

ur defrost terminator is bad and is not going into defrost cycle? and this will stop the fan from circulating the cold air. the heat is only suppose to last up to 20-30 minutes then back into defrost mode? if the defrost timer is bad heres a trick u can use that may get u back into defrost mode, locate the defrost timer in ur fridge usually at top center. then under the timer u will see a tiny slot or hole. if u stick a small screw driver into that hole and turn slowly clockwise till u hear it click? i, it will now go into defrost and u should hear the fan and the compressor go off , hope this helps let me knoiw if u have any more questions, lastly I suspect its not ur timer but ur defrost terminator> meaning is will not allow it to go into heat defrost. its easy and relatively inexpensive.

Amana bx20rw bottom freezer , need to defrost every two weeks . refridgerater box gets warm but freezer section is fine. No ice is visable anywhere and it works fine after being unpluged for a day or two.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly
What your describing is an Automatic defrosting problem. This is controlled by the defrost timer. On your unit it appears to be inside the front grille on the lower RH side. It is item 26 of this link:

Here is a detailed view:

What you should do is rotate the tabs on the defrost timer in the only direction it will allow you to turn it until the compressor shuts off. The defrost cycle should begin and terminate in less than 1 hour. If the cycle does not begin i.e heating element does not come on (1) or... heating element comes on but does not shut off (2) there can be other problems. This is usually caused by a bad defrost heating element (1) or defrost thermostat (2). Items 6 and 7 of this link:

To restart your unit if the defrost cycle does not automatically terminate, just rotate the defrost timer control tab until the compressor re-starts. NOTE: Each time you shut off the compressor there is a 10 - 15 minute pause required for the coolant system to equalize so that the compressor can re-start. Not waiting will cause the compressor thermal overload to cycle every 4 - 6 minutes and the unit will NOT cool.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

My Amana refrigerator defrost timer is supposed to cycle every eight hours. Instead it takes about 14 hours to cycle around back to the defrost mode. The defrost mode does last for the proper 20 minutes....

Relax, some people exagerate was all I was saying.
Anyhow, go to a good parts store and ask for a Supco EDT (Electronic Defrost Timer) replacement as they are more reliable and not much difference in price.

Freezer is fine fride does not work. the dooor was open all night amana arb 905

With the door being open so long all the excess moisture iced up the evaporator coil behind the rear panel inside the freezer blocking the air flow. When it automatically goes through a defrost cycle the ice will be melted. If you cant wait you can defrost it with a hairdryer if you remove the rear panel. It should defrost again in a day or two on it's own according to what type of timer you have. With the electronic models you can force a defrost. Look in the manual to see how to to this.

Amana energy saver not keeping fridge section cool enough. HELP!

if there is frost build up on rear wall of freezer section the unit is not going through defrost cycle which builds up frost on evaporator and restricts cold air flow to the fresh food section. one of three things are bad. defrost heater, defrost thermostat or defrost timer. if no frost on rear wall you might be low of freon.

Refrigerator section on side by side losing cooling

Here is the Amana website with the manuals which should show you where the defrost timer etc. is located. Witht your model number and manual it will be a lot easer

And yes the defrost timer thermostat and heater are the most likely problem.

Do not let this keep running and running or you may lose your compressor too which means a lot more expense than now.

Compressor and fan work on cendenser, evaporater works, but the fan on the evaporater in the freezer rear cuts off after the initial run cycle. The coils then freeze. What are your suggestions replace...

Probably a bad defrost thermostat. The fan motor power runs through the defrost thermostat then to the fan motor. If the defrost thermostat is opening too soon, you get no fan and no defrost.
Yes you can replace this part yourself.

I have an Amana bottom freezer, model BX20S5E that is not cooling properly in either compartment. I have replaced both the defrost thermostat and defrost timer (new). Still no change... what I do notice is...

check door gaskets and see if problem is moisture,or air gate to fridge compartment not working properly.I would recomend verifying defrost cycle is working by turing defrost timer to defrost cycle,it will click when engaged when unit is frozen and heater should come on if all is well,if not heater is probably culpret if the rest is new.
