Screen instructions

Here's a place to start. Go into Control Panel, Programs and Features, and look at each program that starts with "HP". Look up each one on the web and see if they are bloatware, and remove those that are.
If they exist, I uninstall the following... HP Customer Participation Program, Shop for HP Supplies, HP Registration Service, HP Customer Feedback, HP Product Assistant, HP OrderReminder, HP Quick Launch, HP Launch Box, HP Wallpaper, HP Performance Advisor, HP Easy Backup, HP Power Assistant, HP Image Zone Express.
See... http://www.shouldiremoveit.com/HP-oem-bloatware.aspx
There are often many more, but you should research them.

Hp product assistant opens at start up and it says that it is looking for the hp product disk.

Insert the HP Product Disk into the CD/DVD drive.

Or, run the pre-installed utility to "burn" your own set of "System Recovery" CD/DVD disks.

HP Assistant

Logged in as an administrator, look under Start --> Program Files --> HP Product Assistant

Click on Preferences. Disable all four options from basic as well as the advanced tab.
If that doesn't work (after a reboot), try using msconfig. (Start --> Run... msconfig) and unchecking things by HP that look like they might be the offending program. Uncheck one at a time and reboot to see if that does the trick.
Good luck.

Attempt to scan, screen states

This error occurs because the HP scanner can not communicate with your computer and thus won't scan. In most cases this is simply because you don't have all of the necessary drivers installed.
  1. Insert the software CD into your CD ROM drive. The software installer should automatically start
  2. Install the software and restart your computer when prompted
  3. Try to Scan using the Scan To or Start Scan buttons on your printer

Something's gliched, and the only thing I can think of is to run 'msconfig' and remove the PA from the startup programs.

Pop up weindow

Hi Ma`am,

You can stop this message from appearing by deleting it in the start-up configuration. How to do this is go to start then run, on type msconfig. A menu will appear then go to start up tab then uncheck the the HP Product Assistant. After the configuration was done the computer will ask to restart your computer. Try if the popup windows will still appear.

WP xp is coming up and asking for password. I don't recall a pass word. This just started today as I turn the laptop on. ( happen before)

If it's a windows password do this, I've done this plenty of times.
Step1
Take a Windows bootable CD and insert it into your CD-ROM. Boot your computer with the Windows CD as if you were doing the Windows installation. When the CD starts working, you will be prompted to “Press any key to boot from CD”.
Step2
Go through the steps until you will see a setup screen where it requires you to choose from one of two options: Install Windows or Repair Windows
Step3
Press “R” to start repair of the windows. The Setup will start copying the files from CD to your PC hard drive. Wait for few minutes; the computer will then reboot itself automatically.
Step4
The GUI (Graphical User Interface) screen of Windows Setup will be shown on the screen. You will need to go to the command prompt.
If you are using Windows 2000, wait until the setup comes to the place where it says, “Registering Components.” There you are going to pres the “Shift+ F10” key.
If you are using Windows XP, wait until you see a progress bar in the left where it says, “Installing devices.” There you are going to press the “Shift + F10” key.
Step5
Now that you have opened the command prompt, you will need to get access to the control panel. Here is how:
If using Windows 2000, type “control.exe” in command prompt without quotes. If using Windows XP, type “nusrmgr.cpl” in command prompt without quotes.
Step6
Now that you have access to the control panel, you can reset or set a new password using the control panel administration/password utilities. When you are complete, close the command prompt and wait until the repair is completed. Restart your computer and login with your new password.
Remember you will need the windows product key for the operating system in question.
