Hi harry_p58,

It's not really cost effective to repair power supplies such as the one that you have. You can get a new high-quality power supply at very good prices these days (which will be cheaper and more reliable than trying to bring your old one back to life)

Hope that helps,

Take care,
Michael

SOURCE: I have freestanding Series 8 dishwasher. Lately during the filling cycle water hammer is occurring. How can this be resolved

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

Unit will not power on. How to I check to see if the power supply is functional?

If the power supply is not working, nothing will happen, as you describe. Try either a new power supply or ask someone with a meter to check there is voltage coming out of the power supply. If there is, the motherboard may be damaged beyond repair.

Only the original supply is going to work---schematics with voltages and wave forms are rarely available online except to a authorized service center for that brand---they want to SELL REPLACEMENT boards and not have someone fix them.

Failure in either of the following can cause no video output.
  1. Display Panel
  2. Y Drive Board
  3. Y SUS Board
  4. Z SUS board
  5. X Drive Boards
  6. Tape Carrier Package (TCP)
  7. Main Board
Try these if you have electronics background :
Note: Touch your fingers repeatedly to a ground connection point or unpainted metal in the product before proceeding.
  1. Unplug the unit.
  2. Remove the back cover by removing the screws holding it.
  3. Disconnect the LVDS cable from the power supply or from the main board. LVDS cable runs from the right bottom of the power supply to the upper left of the main board. Power supply is located at the upper center of the unit and the main board is at the right bottom of the unit.
  4. Plug the unit back and turn it on or the unit turns on automatically.
  5. Look for the Control Board. It is located right at the center of the unit below the power supply. It has a LED on it.
  6. On the Control Board at the right bottom of the MCM chip, the big chip right at the center of the board, you can see two test points. Short across the two test points.
  7. If there appears a picture of cycling colors and patterns, the Y-SUS, Y-Drive, Z-SUS, Power Supply, X-Boards, TCPs and Panel are all OK. The Main Board or the LVDS cable is defective.
  8. Check LVDS cable continuity.
  9. Replace Main Board if LVDS cable is good.
  10. If no picture of cycling colors appeared on step 6, some adjustment is off or some portion of the signal is missing.
  11. Check fuses or continuity of voltage supply lines going to the X Board/s, Y SUS and Y drive Boards and Z SUS Board.
  12. Replace blown fuses, connect broken lines, and resolder loose solders.
  13. If no apparent damage is found, ask for a qualified or experienced technician's service. Massive and sophisticated tests and voltage readings are required and proper tools are needed such as oscilloscope to find which signal is missing. The parts to be tested are prone to handling damage and requires proper handling and testing.

Heading out the door to work, I accidentally grabbed the wrong power supply. My Coby CD-TV153, which requires a positive center, 13VDC power supply was plugged in to a NEGATIVE CENTER, 9vDC power supply...

its not always fatal depends on what is damaged internal
however it may be cost effective to just replace the unit
the power circuit in the tv needs to be checked and see what if any thing is damaged it then you can make a asesment of repair

SONY TV KV2185AS POWER SUPPLY DEAD, OPENED COVER IC601,C606 & C607 HAVE PHYSICAL DAMAGE. SHOULD I CHECK ANYTHING ELSE BEFORE REPLACING THESE COMPONENTS. I HAVE ELECTRONICS KNOWLEDGE AND AM HANDY WITH A...

Would not recommend repairing this unit as Sonys have no over current protection in the low voltage power supply, which means the low voltage power supply failure you describe is not the root fault. Rather the root fault is highly likely to be bad connections on the main board, leaky diodes near the high voltage power supply, a bad fly back transformer (which Sonys are famous for), or an intermittently arching picture tube, which is also a common Sony problem.

The horizontal output transistor may be shorted as well and if it is, it is also not the root fault. If somehow you manage to repair the circuits that you mentioned, it is highly unlikely that the unit will last very long. In summary, if your unit was a larger, more expensive model it would be worth pursuing all of the root faults causing the collateral damage in the low voltage power supply.

I want to repaire a damaged power supply unit for compaq desktop computer

First a word of warning .... the capacitors in power supply units hold their charge for an awful long time so if you must start disassembling it leave it at least a week for the voltage to dissipate.

Next ...what exactly are you trying to do inside the power supply? I have replaced fans on occassion but further than that, unless you are a qualified electronics engineer, i would question the validity of doing anything.

Why not just buy a new PSU? ...they are not expensive?

Philips Magnavox 17MD255/17 LCD TV had AC voltage applied.

It seems your "power regulator" a small unit inside tv device has damaged due to wrong power supply. In this case usually the power capacitor burns and few other electronic components like triodes. Get the help of a electronic chip technician to replace the damaged components.

Hope it works.

NO POWER TO THE UNIT SV5000 VCR

If you have some tech savvy and a voltmeter, you could check the power supply voltages. This circuit is likely in the close vicinity of the fuse. On the output side you should see a +5 volt, +12 to 15 volt, and perhaps a -35 volt (approx). The +5 supplies the logic circuit, +12 the motors. If these voltages are missing, or way out of tolerance, you will have a dead unit. A frequent cause of problems in the supply is bad electrolytic capacitors, especially in the older units (Panasonic manufactured rigs, late '80s/early '90s). Possible values on these capacitors: 2200MFD/10V 1000MFD/16V and several others. Replacements can be supplied by MCM electronics, Mouser electronics. I use the Panansonic FC series from Digi-Key Electronics. If this is a high dollar > $250 VCR, it might be worth service center repairs. If not, then it is a disposable (unfortunate, but the way it is with most modern electronics).
