Bobbin won't wind on singer 5500 just makes motor noise

To wind a bobbin on the 3130, first raise the presser foot and bring the needle to the highest point in its travel cycle. Next hold the outside of the hand wheel with one hand. While holding the outside of the hand wheel, turn the knob inside the hand wheel towards yourself (counter-clockwise if you face the right side of the sewing machine). Make sure that the spool of thread is on the spool pin with the spool's thread retaining notch to the right. Put the appropriate spool holder on the spool pin. Snap the thread into the thread guide in to the left of the spool holder. Lift the top cover to expose the bobbin winding mechanism. Snap the thread into the bobbin winder tension disc by wrapping it around the front of the disc and then bringing it back towards the bobbin winding spindle. The bobbin winder tension disc is to the left of the top cover. Put the thread through the hole in the bobbin from the center of the bobbin. Keep the hole up and put the bobbin on the spindle. Push the spindle to the right. Hold the thread above the bobbin and start the machine. After a few rotations, you can let go and cut this part of thread. Restart the sewing machine and let it finish winding the bobbin. Once the bobbin is full, move the spindle to the left and remove the bobbin from the spindle. Cut the spool thread to release the bobbin to put it in the bobbin case. Hold the hand wheel and turn the inner knob away from yourself.

Singer indicates that the 2430 to the Merritt 2404. The Merritt 2404 manual is available on the Singer support site: https://www.singer.com/support . To wind the bobbin, make sure that the needle is up and lift the presser foot. Hold the hand wheel with one hand and keep it from moving. With the other hand, loosen the knob in the center of the hand wheel by turning the knob towards you. If the thread is not already on the spool pin, place it on the spool pin with the thread retaining slit to the right. Put the spool holder on the spool pin so that it holds the spool firmly.

Next snap the thread through the thread guide post and open the top cover. (If you have been sewing with the spool, unthread the upper thread back to the guide post.) Wrap the thread the bobbin tension disc going clockwise as you look at the top of the disc. (Bring the thread in front of the machine as you move to the left; then bring around to the back as you bring it to the bobbin winder.) Bring the thread up through the hole in the bobbin. Place the bobbin on the spindle with the hole up. Move the bobbin winder to the right. Hold onto the thread above the bobbin while you start winding the bobbin. After a few turns are on the bobbin, you can let go. After the bobbin is full (or full enough for your task), clip the thread and remove the bobbin. Move the bobbin winder to the left. Tighten the knob in the hand wheel by turning it away from you while holding the hand wheel.

1. Turn the power on the machine.
2. Open the bobbin winder cover at the top on the right side of the sewing machine.
3. Swing up the bobbin thread spool pin. Move the bobbin thread spool pin up as far as possible.

4. Place the bobbin on the bobbin winder shaft so that the spring on the shaft fits into the notch in the bobbin.

5. Slide the bobbin winder shaft to the right.

NOTE: If the correct size bobbin is not used at this time; when the bobbin winder is engaged; the bobbin winder will make a usual noise and not wind the bobbin correctly.
6. Place the spool of thread for the bobbin onto the bobbin thread spool pin.
7. Slide the spool cap onto the bobbin thread spool pin.
NOTE: If using thread that winds off quickly, such as nylon or metallic thread, place the spool net over the spool before placing the spool of thread onto the spool pin.
8. Pull out some thread, and then thread the thread guide for the bobbin winding. Hold the thread with both hands, and then securely pass the thread as far as possible into the two slits in the thread guide.

9. While using your left hand to hold the end of the thread that wraps around the thread guide for bobbin winding, use your right hand to wind the free end of the thread clockwise around the bobbin five or six times.

10. Pull the thread to the right and pass it through the slit in the bobbin winder seat.

Do you mean the Singer 4411 Heavy Duty sewing machine? If so,
first place the spool on the spool pin with an appropriate sized spool holder, if you are starting the project. Snap the thread into the thread guide to the left of the of the spool pin. Wrap the thread clockwise around the bobbin winder tension discs (slightly to the left and forward of the thread guide). Bring thread towards the bobbin spindle. Thread the bobbin (put the thread through the hole in the bobbin). Place the bobbin on the spindle with the hole up. Move the bobbin spindle to the right. Hold onto the thread above the bobbin and step on the foot control pedal. When the bobbin finishes winding the thread, cut the thread at the top of the bobbin and the incoming thread from the spool. Move the bobbin spindle to the left and remove the bobbin. If you have already threaded the machine for sewing, you will need to remove it from the various guides and tension discs that are used in sewing. Then after winding the bobbin, re-thread the top thread.

Make sure the bobbin is seated all the way on the winding pin. There may be an adjustment for it--a technician can probably fix it for you. However, you can also try lifting the thread with a pencil tip just before it winds onto the bobbin. Some of my machines wind the thread unevenly (more on the bottom than the top of the bobbin) and I balance it out by lifting it when winding.

Turn your machine off and leave it off. Remove all bobbins - in the machine & from the pin. Remove all thread - from threaded machine and bobbin thread path. Clip the machine thread at the spool and pull the needle thread towards yourself. Clip bobbin thread at spool and close to bobbin, then pull towards you through thread guides. This keeps the tension where it belongs. Move the bobbin winding shaft from normal sewing back to winding bobbin a couple times. It should click in place when moved to the winding position. Check to see if there is any thread that has slipped under the bottom of the bobbin and wound itself around & under the bottom of the shaft. Carefully unwind to clear. If the shaft does not easily move back to the sewing position it is probably stuck in the winding position. Don't force it, but try to get it out of the winding position. Leave it to the left in the normal sewing position (unclicked). Check to see if there is any thread caught anywhere along the path from spool to the winding pin. Pay close attention to the first thread guide and the two discs the thread slips between that control tension. Hand wind the wheel on the right towards you to raise and lower the needle a couple of times. Stop with needle in highest position. Do NOT wind hand wheel backwards (away from you). Make sure the bobbin pin is not in the winding position. Now turn on your machine. Needle should jump to default position. Move the stitch length and stitch width guides to the far right, then far left, to attain the green lights. Press the reverse stitch button to raise lower and raise the needle. It will stop in the highest position. If you still have the error code - make sure the bobbin winding pin is NOT in the winding position. Remove the needle. Lower the presser foot and run the machine without any thread a bit. If the needle bar does not go up and down most likely the bobbin pin is stuck in the winding position. If the code has cleared use your manual to carefully wind a new bobbin. Make sure you are using a 15J bobbin which this machine requires. It will not work with just any bobbin. Next, raise the presser foot then carefully thread the machine. If you don't have a manual you can download one from the Singer website. You might consider cleaning the entire machine paying special attention to the hook area and feed dogs while the power is off. If you find a lot of lint do this more frequently to prevent buildup. Take special care when replacing the bobbin care. Hope this helps. If not call Singer. It may take some time but you should be able to reach someone to help you troubleshoot. If this is an older machine I recommend taking it for repair yourself instead of sending to Singer

Which Singer machine do you have? I know how to wind and insert a full bobbin for some models.

Some wind the bobbin with it in the case. This is the case with my Touch & Sew. Inserting a full bobbin is simple. Open the slide plate and drop in the bobbin with the rings up. Make sure that to hold the bobbin thread so that it comes off at the left. Then close the slide plate and make sure that the end of the bobbin thread is coming through the notch. Hold onto the threads and turn the handwheel until the top and bottom thread come back up with a twist. To wind a bobbin for this machine, open the slide plate (some models have a little mark to line up the slide plate). Put in the empty bobbin and thread the top normally. Set the machine to straight stitch and push the bobbin wind button in. (This has a bulls-eye symbol on it.) Wrap the end of the top thread around the presser foot screw several times and hold onto the end. Step on the foot control to start winding. Keep winding until the bobbin is full. The thread wound onto the screw should break. Pull some extra thread and cut it to separate the top and bottom threads. Close the slide plate and set your desired stitch.

Other models are wound at the top of the machine. For some of with a drop-in bobbin, you need to bring the thread down to a catch and then off to the left to another catch. Some have a vertical bobbin. I don't remember if they all have a removable case. Those that do need the thread to come through a notch on the case that pulls the thread under a spring that keeps the bobbin tension. However you should check your manual. To insert a filled bobbin, lift the presser foot and turn the hand wheel to put the needle at the highest point. Slide open the face plate and drop in the bobbin with the two holes up. Pull the thread into the groove near the center front of the bobbin opening and then to the left (another groove). Then pull it to the back of the machine and close the face plate.

To wind a bobbin, you will need to unthread the machine most of the way. Leave the the thread through first and second thread guides. Then bring the thread around the bobbin winding disc (so that it goes under and around the disc) back towards the bobbin pin (on the top right of the machine). Pull the thread through the correct hole in the bobbin (the one away from the center of the bobbin). Leave a 4" tail. Push the bobbin onto the pin and then push the bobbin and pin as far to the right as it will go. Hold onto the thread tail and step on the presser foot to start winding. After ~10 winds, temporarily stop winding and cut the thread tail. Then step on the presser foot and complete winding. When done, cut the thread to separate the bobbin from the top thread. Rethread the top thread and insert your bobbin.

slide plate may be worn - i had the same problem. try holding down the center of the bobbin with a pin while slide plate is in the winding position.
