Re: can't play cd or read files on my lap top
Theres a number of things u can try:
1. system restore your laptop back to a date right before it stopped working.
2. take the cd drive out and then put it back in, then restart.
3. update new drivers for the cd drive
4. ensure your device is "enabled" under your hardware setting within control panel.

is it the stock cd player if not then it may be because there are tabs in for display puposes so ppl cant put eny cds in them and play it while in store go to a futur shop or eny stereo store if it is stock it may be a defect or a pin let go inside or your eject system is shorting somewere inside
This problem is normal and exists with many CD/DVD drives. On some of the drives, if you put in blank discs and try to open the disc in My Computer or Windows Explorer, Windows displays no contents or a blank disc. Whereas on other drives, you get the error message that you mentioned about incorrect function.
What software are you using to burn CDs or DVDs? Are you able to burn CDs but not DVDs or you can't burn both the discs? Did you try a CDs with a different make/manufacturer? Some drives refuse on some disc makes. Try another disc and another writing speed, or try the lowest writing speed available with your software.
i) try to place the CD(u wanted to play....) in the CD/DVD Tray which is right on top of ur tower by pressing button on CD/DVD drive and wait for few seconds....
ii) then Click on Start button -----> Click on the option MY COMPUTER---> a new window will appear
right at the bottom u will see caption "Devices with Removable Storage", right click on the CD/DVD Drive icon(not the Floppy Drive....) and select the option Explore and u will able to open the data or file or video present on that CD............... and try to click file or video or songs and u will be able succesfully play songs or video or read data present onthat CD...
it,s one of 2 things.
1:) your recording MP3 to CD. Only recognised on a PC, or MP3 Player. The standard CD Format Is WAV.
If you burn with Nero. you should have a tickbox Which Says ( Normalise all audio Files )
2:) the disk is not finalised. Closed having written the T.O.C Table-Of Contents. this is to allow the reader viewing it, what is actually written on the disk.
try to play a song from original cds.
maybe you brunt it in mp3 file, or its a different format. try to burn your song to cd-r.
if still, try to use nero to burner..
if it wont play your original cds and burnt cds, then the optical lens or the board is broken.
hope I helped you.
