Question about Philips 9P5534C 55" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Screen now has 3 small boxes in middle - one red, one green, one white

I have had this set with no problems for about 8 years. About 6 months ago when I would turn the TV on it would start going in and out on the sides. As time went by it took longer and longer for the set to stay on. It was almost like an hour glass effect. Then one day there was just three small boxes in the middle of a black screen - one red, one green, and one white. I know it will probably cost more to fix than it is worth but I really do like the TV and cannot afford to buy a new big screen. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You!!

Also have similar problem; picture went in and out for months, now no picture at all (maybe there are 3 boxes but we gave up on this TV for now)

What exactly am I looking for to repair it?

I had Sony TV for 8 years. It works very well. This morning TV works well. I turn off at 9:00am, and at 9:30am I couldn't turn on. I press the power butter on front of the TV, a red light keeps...

check the horizontal output, is it defctive? then change it but that means your flyback is going bad.
if the tv will start it wont keep up for 6 months, its worth a try. luck is always on everybody`s side.......

you can also check first if you have a +5 volt at the power botton.
if not diagnose the power supply for bad parts. mostly a capacitor or a resitor. both for the oscilating in the power section

I hope you have a service plan for this set. Most likely--the CRT"s are going bad. This was a VERY common problem for Sony sets of this age. the CRT tubes SHOULD last a long time...BUT Sony had a BUNCH of the tubes that had 'contamination" on the cathodes of the guns...and after a few years..this 'flakes off" and shorts out the tubes. There WAS a recall on these a couple of years ago, but I am not sure about it now. You will need ALL 3 tubes to fix this problem. If it was me...I would try and find out if there is any way to get Sony to cover it..., if the set is not more than about 8years old.

Food and water freezes but ice cream is soft

Check the door gasket seal.
Open the door for a few seconds and then close.
Immediately open the door again, and, if sealing properly, it should take more pulling force to open the door.

I had the same problem w/ the same TV about 6 months ago. You need a new optical engine. Hopefully you are still under warranty. Once that was replaced, the tv looks great.

Hello, You have a high voltage section problem I would not suggest fixing this set on your own. You will need to take this set to the shop. Because there are no user repairable parts inside of the set.

Losing image

i have a very simliar problem, i found a way around it by changing a seeting in the advanced options. somehow, my horizontral position was changed from wahtever the default was to 88, which set it too far to the left. set it back to 50 and while the image was good, the menu is still in the oddly placed area....oh well....hopefully it's not the bulb, i just changed the damn thing less than a year ago
