Question about Western Digital Passport WDXML800UE (WDXML800UETE) 80 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Corrupt portable drive

My wd 250 gig passport portable harddrive has several folders with subfolders and files that appear corrupt. Names changes to random characters and squares. No viruses were detected. Any ideas on the best way to get back the correct data? Also, a folder of mp3s has many songs jumbled together in a file. Some songs are shaky, play fast or are a mix of two or more songs. Any ideas how to fix them or get rid of the bad ones, without listening to all. (I have 1000's)

I don't think the below product id is correct.

Hi,
I had the same problem with my WD passport. Most of the folders displayed wierd characters and couldn't access those folders. Thanks to Zero Assumption Recovery software, I had successfully recovered all my files. Check this link on how it works:
http://www.z-a-recovery.com/unformat-tutorial.htm
If your hard drive is detected by your computer you can use this software for data recovery.

Thanks
Sid

My partner has managed to corrupt a number of folders on my WD Passport drive! Whereas the folders now appear to be files and the data (Excel files) are now no longer accessible

It's hard to say from your description what the problem is but the first thing to do is determine the condition of the drive. You can check if there are problems with the drive using the free trial version of http://www.hdtune.com/

If it checks out ok then you can try to recover your data with Recuva it's free http://www.piriform.com/recuva

Or if you need data recovery help this a good choice for low cost and fast data recovery. All data recovery work is performed remotely over the Internet from a boot cd that you download and the best part is they just ask for donations if you are happy with the results: http://FreeDataRecovery.us

Why wont my Western Digital WD Passport 250GB Portable Drive 250 GB Hard Drive work?

Several possibilities:

* bad USB port in your computer (try another USB port)
* messed-up copy of Windows (try connecting to a different computer)
* damaged USB cable between computer and the Passport (replace it)
* bad disk-drive inside the enclosure (replace it)
* bad USB-to-disk-drive adapter (buy a new "empty" enclosure)

Check the warranty on it, to see if W.D. will replace it, at minimal cost to you. If the warranty has expired, W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- buy a new Passport through their web-site, and you qualify for a discount on your purchase.

How do I restore my files on my passport to my internal hard drive

Why not make it KISS (Keep it simple and stupid). Go to your my Passport folders or files that you want to copy, Click on it and Copy (ctrl c) or Cut it (ctrl x), now go to your internal drive (C:\ or D:\,etc) and do Paste (ctrl V. You can also copy or cut multiple files or folders.

Can't load a 13 gig avi file onto wd drive with 90 gigs free

Typically this is because there aren't large enough fragments to load. Run defrag several times and try again. You might also run the cleanup program and remove any temporary files, temporary internet files and anything in your waste basket before you run defrag.

Please let me know how this turns out.
