I had a friend with the same issue. I just modded his wii and then he backed the games up to a hard drive and they played perfectly without an update being needed. The best place to get your wii modded is www.wiihdmods.com
You may have a corrupted update, try this.
1.turn off your console
2.press and hold the sync button on the console
3.still pressing the sync button, turn on your console
4.wait until it fully boots up, then release the sync button, this will clear any corrupted updates.
turn off console, wait 10 seconds, turn console on then see if you can update.
Remember thumbs up if this helps.
With the console off hold down the sync button. Continue holding the sync button and power the unit on. Holding the sync button should clear the failed update and allow you to boot to your dashboard.
If the below doesn't work, you'l need to send it back to MSFT.
Clear All Installed Game Updates and Console CacheGo to the "system" blade Select "memory" Press Y on the HD symbol Press X,X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,X A message will appear saying: "Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices?" Select Yes Clear Any Failed system updates that cause the console to error. With the console off, press and hold the sync up button (the small white one) While holding the sync button press the power button to turn on the console Continue to hold the sync button until the Console has booted up completely. During the boot process the console should clear any failed updates, allowing you to use it normally.
I finally found out how to fix this! go to this website :http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4801064/XBOX_360_Update_Files and download the torrent. Follow the directions from the second page of this forum: http://360mods.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=9796 . all you have to do is copy the $systemupdate folder that you need onto a usb drive and plug it into the 360 then turn on your 360. you can find out what number update you need by the number at the botom of the screen or if your like me and dont have those numbers youll have to go back and forth untill it boots up to the right update. make sure your flash drive is cleared out except the $systemupdate folder. go one at a time until it boots up with that update file.
