Vacuum making loud noise (like hole in tube)

Our vacuum started making a loud noise and of course we just barely missed the window for our warrenty. It sounds like there is a hole in a tube somewhere. Wondered if anyone had any suggestions or ideas. Would appreciate any help we can get.
Thanks!

I have the same problem with the same age Kenmore. I checked for clogs but there were none. The loud noise sounded like a vibration. The noise was so loud you almost couldn't be in the house when using the vacuum. What I found was, the outer rubber housing of the motor/fan was held together by electrical tape and split at the electrical tape (wow, that's a surprise!!). I taped the housing together with fresh tape but the motor housing continued to split when the filters got slightly clogged and higher pressure was generated inside the motor. I suspect that the split was causing some amount of air from the motor to be exhausted into the inside of the vacuum causing internal parts to vibrate and resonate.

I haven't been able to fix this problem. Unfortunately, the excessive vibration caused a control board to fail which controls the agitator. At this point the vacuum is useless. Poor design by Kenmore.

I have the same vacuum - it's a clog in the brush area, or where the hose connects to the base. Unhook the hose, like you're going to use a tool. Lay the vacuum flat, so you can stick something in the plastic tube (at the base where you disconnected the hose) without the awkward angle. I use a dryer vent cleaner, but you could probably use a wire hanger. Push through until it comes out through the brush area...should fix your problem.

Disconnect the tube an see if you hear the same sound.put the tube back together 1 section at a time and try to hear the noise after each section.that will narrow it dow where the noise is coming from

Hi! My Dyson DC17 starts fine and then, within a second, gets very loud with an extra sucking noise.

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

Like most Dyson vacuums, DC17 includes a suction relief valve. This allows extra airflow into the vacuum to protect the motor if the machine is used when blocked. If you've already washed the pre-motor filter and checked all the ducts for blockages, it's possible there's an issue with your machine's cyclone pack which has caused it to block.

We'd appreciate the opportunity to help you check for this - please do not continue to use your machine in the meantime as this may cause damage. When you have your DC17 easily to hand, please give the Dyson Customer Helpline a call on 1-866-693-9766 (US), or 1-877-397-6622 (CA).

We'll look forward to speaking with you.

My vacuum is making a loud whirring sound and is hotter than normal.

Hi Kelsey! I understand how frustrating this must be. Dirty filters or a clog can cause the vacuum to change sound and be hotter than normal.

Here is a quick link to troubleshooting the excessive noise:

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC14 Animal. The cleaner's brush control system is designed to make a ratcheting sound to alert you if the brushbar is jammed. Although you've already cleaned the brushbar, it's a good idea to follow the steps shown in our online support guide to make sure you haven't missed any obstructions in the cleaner head:

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=650&product=DC14-ANIMAL_US

This should allow you to resolve your issue without further assistance. However, if you've checked the brushbar and cleaner head are clear of threads, hair, or other obstructions, but the cleaner still seems to be making the ratcheting noise, it's probably best if you get in touch with us directly. One of our experts will be happy to run through some troubleshooting over the phone with you to identify the cause of the issue, and will be able to recommend the best course of action. You can call us free on 08002980298 (UK), or 1866MYDYSON (US). We'll look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Jack

Loud noise and appears the belt is slipping

Generally you will find soil and string of some sort wrapped around the drive spool. Make sure you unplug it before starting and it might be quite hot.

Loud noise

When the motor bearings start to go bad, they will make a loud noise. Some motors if a piece broke off of the fan, then it also will make a loud noise. You may have to replace the motor.
