You just need to download the appropriate audio driver for your motherboard. Go to the Device Manager and install all missing drivers for "Unknown Devices". Either connect to the internet or use the driver disc which came with your laptop.
For those who doesn't know how to access Device Manager, please follow the steps below.
For Windows XP: Start -> Run -> Type devmgmt.msc (in the box) -> Right click Unknown device -> Properties -> Driver tab -> Update driver
For Windows Vista and Windows 7 Start -> Type devmgmt.msc (in the start search box) -> Right click Unknown device -> Properties -> Driver tab -> Update driver
if you got the hardware updates from Microsoft they often misidentify sound cards and install bad drivers. See if you can isolate the microsoft update for the sound card and or roll back the driver to an older different driver
support.dell.com select drivers the select product select latitude, select d610 confirm, all the drivers will appear select operating system sound and download the correct one i believe it should be onboard sigmatel.
do you get any error message, please double check your device manager and make sure you are installing the correct driver, you can try to go to support.dell.com click on drivers and downloads and make sure to enter your service tag, that is the 7 alphanumeric characters found on your tower. in that way you will be able to know if that is the correct driver.
Sounds like you need to re-load the device drivers for the display and modem. Dell maintains a very good library in their download secton for all the models that they made. Then use device manager to re-load the driver..
