Hooking up to main pc and to another in the next room. have no cd

I was given a Linksys cable/dsl router w/4port switch. I have the power adapter and network cable. I do not have the setup CD-ROM or the guide. I have no idea what to do or how to do it. I want to hook it up to the main home pc and then to another in the next room, maybe 6-8 feet away. Amy from NY

To setup the linksys, do the following:
the 4-port linksys is not a smart terminal.
1). you need to get the IP address (4 group of 3 numbers).
from the cable company before you can configure the router.
2). option: goto start>>all programs>>accessories>>command prompt.
type the exactly "ipconfig/all"
you will see "Windows IP Configuration" page
look into the section "Ethernet adapter local area connection"
copy the follow:
IP Address
Subnet Mask
Default Gateway
DNS Servers
Primary Wins Servers

once you get that information. then do the following:
1). connect a cable, something looks like a phone jack, slightly larger. it has 8-pins.
between the router LAN pot and the LAN port (rear of computer).
2). open the Internet Browser and type in the following address on the address bar.
"http:\\192.168.1.1" press enter.
you will see a administrator login pop up. Enter "admin" for the username and the password. press enter.
(Note: if the router deny admin login. you have to reset the router to factory default.)
To set the router to factory; there is a small pin hole next to the power cable. use a straighten out paper clip press in the button and disconnected the power cable. wait 30sec. remove the paper clip, connect the power cable. and try to login again.

once you are in the "router" do the following:
goto setup page
select RFC 24583 routed
enter the IP address you have written down
enter the DNS in the in DNS line and Line 2
click apply and ave the setting
exit eh Browser and turn off the router
connected additional cable from the modem WAN port (porvided by your cable company) to the WAN port on the router.
turn on the router.

to configure the computer to communicate with the router, do the follwoing:
right click on the "My network">>porperties.
right click on the local area network>>properties.
Select TCP/IP under the general tab
select "Obtain an IP address automatically"
and "Obtain DNS server address automatically"
click apply and OK.
exit.
you should have access to the internet via the router and the modem.
configure the remaining computer the same way.
you should be fine.

if you have nay other question, please post them in this thread.

thanks and good luck

Since you did not include your exact model number and type of internet provider I cannot give you more specific instructions. Although you can refer to the links below on how to set it up. If you require further assistance just reply to this and give me the model number of your ISP and the model of your router. Also answer this question " When you plug your computer to your modem do you get online automatically or do you need a username and password"

Download the firmware from the Download tab after following the link. You should be able to find user guides and other help for your router there too. Downloading the firmware should allow you to use the router. The CD just contained that info.

I lost my netgear installatio cd, what do i do to install it?

You dont need that CD, in fact I recommend NOT using it.
1. Power off your cable or dsl modem for about 30 minutes 2. Also power of the router 2. Connect a cable from the modem to the Internet port on the Linksys router 3. Connect your PC to the router. 4. Power ONLY the dsl or cable modem on NOT the router. 5. After about 1 minute power on the router.
Should work now.

How to hook up the Ethernet 5port Workgroup Hub Model No. ew5HUB

To start with please make sure it says router on it as the title says "Networking Hub". These are two different devices. If not return the Hub and purchase a Linksys Router then follow instructions below.

Assuming you have a router:

Before you begin unplug the power from the Cable or DSL Modem before you start as they will have to be powered on in a particular order I will discuss later.

Your cable or DSL modem will have a cable coming out of it that looks similar to a phone line except a little larger. The cable will say CAT5 or CAT6 or Ethernet on it.

On your Linksys Router there will be a ports/jack that you can plug the Cable into from your Cable/DSL Modem. You want to look for one labled "WAN" or "Internet". Plug it in then plug in the power to your Cable or DSL Modem. When the "Ready" light is on the modem, plug in the power cable to your router.

The next step is hooking it up to your computer. There will be anywhere from 1 to 8 more ports available on your Router that is number 1,2,3,4, etc. Plug another Ethernet Cable into any one of those ports. With the other end plug it into your PC or Laptop, there is only one port/jack on your computer that this plug will fit in. Power up your PC and voila, you should be on the Internet.

Please let me know if this solves your problem.

Thanks,
Adam
