Dark shadows on prints and copies - Brother MFC-8860DN

We are getting dark shadows/blotches on the LH side edge of prints and copies. Have cleaned the corona wire, scanner glass, and the drum with cotton swab and rubbing alcohol. There was a lot of toner accumulated on the LH side of the drum, so I dabbed it away, but the prints/copies following that were the same. When I looked the toner had accumulated in the same plac on the drum unit again. Just checked the drum life and it says 12% - will a new drum fix the problem? Thanks!

Thanks for the tip. I have shaken the toner cartridge as suggested but that hasn't helped.

OK, I will try a new drum and hope that solves the problem! Thanks for your help.

First try to redistribute the toner inside the cartridge. Take out the cartridge and shake it around a bit and see if this helps. You could also try a new cartridge before you think of replacing the drum unit..

OK, in that case, you may have to replace the drum unit.

Drum life is low - the percentage is based on the prints registered plus add the actual wear and tear.

A new drum will fix the problem.

My brother mfc 7440N prints splotches every 3-3.5" on every page printed. This occurred with the previous and new toner cartridges. How to fix?

For crying out loud.

The "blotch" is caused by damage to the drum or to the toner fusing roller.

If the "blotch" is loose toner (in other words you can smear it) then the fuser roller is damaged and that assembly needs to be replaced.

If the "blotch" is fused (in other words you cannot smear it around) then the drum is damaged and that assembly needs to be replaced.

The original MSRP for the Brother MFC-7440n in 2008 was $429 (US) / 213 pounds [FixYa couldn't handle the pound sign!! =8-) ] (UK) / $499 (AU). The present street value is about $199 according to Brother ( http://www.brother-usa.com/MFC/ModelCompare/4/MFC7440N_MFC7460DN#.UXBKKKLq3yA ).

A drum unit is $80 (Amazon) or $115 (Staples).

That same $200 could get you a Canon Pixma MX-922 (Canon http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/printers_multifunction/office_all_in_one_inkjet_printers/pixma_mx922). Inkjet? Yes. But fast. Airprint. 2-sided ADF and copying. Auto-duplexing. CD/DVD disc printing. Frankly, if I didn't already have an Epson 835, I would buy this one. My old Canon 820 still chugs along as beautifully as the day I got it (about a zillion years ago).

For $50 more you can get a top-rated laser, their imageCLASS MF4880dw (though oddly, without Airprint - for Airprint in a Canon laser, you have to step up to the big boy: the imageCLASS MF8580Cdw).
.

Well. Have fun!

I have a brother MFC 9840cdf I would like to print the back side of post cards that I already have... how can I do this?

If your printer have a Document Automatic Feeder on the top and have a duplex printing, then you can print on both side of the printer.

If not, try to do it manual by copying the front side and then reinsert the copy again to the paper tray facing down with the letter head in outward position.

Black dots/blotches on the sides of printed sheets - whats is the cause and how t to fix it

If you have random blotches on both sides of the sheet, your printer probably needs cleaning, especially in the fuser section. If the fuser is difficult to get at, here's a good cheat developed for HP LaserJet 6 printers: Use a basic graphics program such as Microsoft Paint to draw three solid black rectangles about 2.5" top to bottom, going all the way across the paper (the space in between is not critical - the key is that you go as close to edge-to-edge as you can get). Print out this sheet.

Put the sheet back in the paper tray so it will print on the blank side (usually printed side up). Open up a quick text processor (Notepad in Windows). Type a single space, then print (some text editors won't print a document with no data in it). Dirt in the fuser will get stuck to the black areas on your cleaning sheet. Test your work by printing another copy of " ". Repeat with a new cleaning sheet if necessary.

I have a BROTHER MFC- 8860DN that makes black streaks on copies

If this is only happening with copies and not straight prints, it is possible that the problem is with the scanning unit. Use the soft cloth to clean the scanner area to the left side of the machine where pages are scanned when run through the page feeder. A spec of dust or other debris in this area will appear as a streak along the length of the page.

If it occurs on all prints, You may need to replace the drum or clean the fuser unit.

Mark on page

First try to clean the head: Open the top cover and print head, Moisen a small piece of soft, lint-free cloth with alchol and keep wiping the edge of the print head... second, This could also be caused by excess lubricant on the tonercartridge . Print or feed up to 10 sheets of paper through the printer to eliminate the marks. If the problem continues please contact Brother Customer Service at 1-800-284-4329 Monday through Friday, 9:00am - 7:00pm EST, excluding holidays.
