The signal from the STU to the Hitachi box is going in the wrong direction. Is the adaptor that you have switchable? If so, flick the switch in the other direction and this will fix it. If the adaptor is not switchable get one that is. Then set the STU output to RGB.
Chassis will need to be pulled by a skilled technician. Some specific area hand-soldering
is needed and the STK convergence IC's need
changing w/OEM or better quality parts. You have a good set worthy of repair.
If you have the ability to remove some of the
connectors to the main chassis & flip it over
so you can see the chassis from the bottom,
inspect the solder connections around the
power supply and near the high voltage..the
flyback area, you could have a cold , cracked solder joint or several of them due to age of the tv. Use a magnifer & bright light to try
& spot them, resolder & put the chassis back
together, see if this helped.
