The signal from the STU to the Hitachi box is going in the wrong direction.
Is the adaptor that you have switchable? If so, flick the switch in the
other direction and this will fix it. If the adaptor is not switchable get
one that is. Then set the STU output to RGB.

Toshiba tv 61a61 screen all red

Your unit is 10 years old and more than likely needs the drives adjusted on the blue and green guns. I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r6814105-adjust_screen_drive_crt_projection_tvs

which explains the process to adjust the screen drives for the best picture.

Chassis will need to be pulled by a skilled technician.Some specific area hand-soldering is needed and the STK convergence IC's need changing w/OEM or better quality parts.You have a good set worthy of repair.

No picture/no sound

If you have the ability to remove some of the connectors to the main chassis & flip it over so you can see the chassis from the bottom, inspect the solder connections around the power supply and near the high voltage..the flyback area, you could have a cold , cracked solder joint or several of them due to age of the tv. Use a magnifer & bright light to try & spot them, resolder & put the chassis back together, see if this helped.
