Freezer won't maintain temperature any lower than 16-18

It appears that your refrigerator is missing defrost. It will be difficult for anyone to provide photos of your defrost heater. I recommend that you unplug long enough to allow defrost to begin manually so we can get freezer door open and remove frozen goods long enough to place somewhere safe until we examine the defrost heater and defrost thermostat. At this point the only pictures will be the ones you email me. This appears to be a new breed of Profile from GE. If you would like to attempt this please let me know. The defrost heater is part number WR50X10043 but that means nothing until we do some testing, Let me Know, Sea Breeze

Fan is making really loud noise due to ice build up in the freezer. had this fixed once before and the tech found large chunks of ice in the back of the freezer which were causing the fan to make the very...

DEFROST PROBLEM
The evaporator coil behind the cover on the back wall inside the freezer will ice up under normal conditions. Every 8 to 10 hours for around 20 minutes the defrost timer (or in most newer models the electronic adaptive defrost control) will turn the defrost heater on to melt the built up ice. There is a defrost thermostat which prevents the heater from overheating the freezer by breaking the heater circuit when the temp reaches close to 32 degrees F. The entire cooling system shuts off during the defrost cycle and starts back when the timer advances through the cycle.

If this ice is not melted it will continue to build up until the air can’t flow over the coil to circulate the cold air through the freezer and into the fridge. The temperature change in the fridge is usually noticed first followed by the freezer.

If the defrost thermostat is bad, it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won’t turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad.
With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm.
You can also bypass(disconnect the two wires plugged into it and twist them together) the thermostat to see if the heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs replaced.

The defrost heater is located on the evaporator. It is in a tube which is at the bottom and can also go up the sides of the evaporator. On some types you can see a burnt spot if it’s bad. With an ohm meter it should show continuity from end to end when disconnected from the wiring in the freezer. You can also test the wiring for voltage when it’s in the defrost mode.

you have an adaptive defrost control instead of a timer, replace it if the heater and thermostat test good. It is located in the fridge with the controls

Ref age 2 made a loud sound in freezer and does not always keep things frozen

OK, I'm going to look over your model and service manual. I do need you to tell me if the noise is continuous or a one time pop? Two years old is almost new so let me try to help you. Click Here=> ATB1836AR for your service manual. Your defrost heater has a glass tube surrounding it and can find a link or photo at the next two links just click on repair guy and enter part number is part number=> 63001387 The defrost thermostat is part=> 63001388 and the defrost timer is part number=> 63001353 I would like you to open freezer and examine the rear wall for a layer of frost. If yes the we most likely have a defrost problem caused by one of these three parts. If yes also unplug and lets examine the defrost heater and defrost thermostat. Some people have the parts and some don't. If you should need me you may find me here at Fixya or here=> Appliance 911. If you still need assistance, contact me here at Fixya or through my site HERE or here Sea Breeze Appliance Parts feel free to ask any time, Sea Breeze

I own an amana ARB2214CW fridge. 22Cubic foot. We have a loud popping noise I believe when the temp control cuts in or out. Can anyone help? Thanks Derek

it could be either the temperature is expanding or contracting the unit or its in defrost mode and its the water hitting the heater when its hot during defrost

The freezer appears to be thawing even when shut all day.

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

GE side by side #ESS25LGNA CC freezer warms every month or two

You have a common problem with your defrost heater or defrost thermostat. They, along with a timer regulate a cycle that periodically defrosts the ice buildup on your condensor. hence it is a frost free because it is done automatically .You will have to remove the back cover of your freezer compartment to access the problem. You should see a heater element or two and a thermostat (round thingy wired before the heater. The thermostat will have to be bypassed to perform the following test .after you bypass the therm, turn the defrost timer clockwise until you hear a loud click. you should be in defrost mode. if the heaters heat up the therm is bad. If the heaters are not on then you have a bad heater element. You can check them for continuity with a ohm meter to confirm. hope this helps

GE side by side GSS20IEP Refrigerator freezer freezing

this is a problem that is no stranger to most GE side by sides; GE has used a glass type defrost heater in the freezer which often fails. If you manually defrost your appliance (unplug and leave doors open for 24 hrs) then plug back in, it will appear to work normally for a few days and gradually build up frost on the evap panel (back panel in the freezer) and eventually the refrigerator side will seem to loose cooling due to frosted damper, or lack of cold air transfer over the evap coil. The fix for this is to replace the defrost heaters (s). While not as common, defrost thermostats can open causing the unit to skip defrost, and even less likely is the defrost control (either mechanical timer or adaptive defrost). First, defrost your appliance, then remove the evap panel and ohm out the heater(s), if open, replace. If they check ok, check your defrost thermostat (small disc like object attached by a clip on the evap. coil itself) for signs of popping open or open ohm readings at normally closed temperatures. Its a good idea to change this anyway when replacing defrost heaters as the two work hand in hand. Last, check the defrost timer by manually advancing the screw advance clockwise until you hear the first click, then check voltage to the defrost heater and thermostat, if no voltage present replace timer. If your appliance is equipped with a adaptive defrost board, refer to the schematic for proper diagnostics.
