Question about Dell 1720dn Laser Printer
I want to perform a firmwareupdate. I´ve found the needed file on the dell server. It´s called R156881.fls. Does anybody know what to do with this?
Please help, thanks
You need to run the usbflash.exe file that should have come with the fls file. If not you can get it from a number of sources either DELL or Lexmark sites.
The usbflash file will ask for the .fls file when it is run.
However later you say you are trying to resolve a problem with a paper jam being indicated when there is none. If you take the toner and pckit out ...underneath them in the inside of the printer ...in the middle ...is a sensor. Its a tiny plastic bit that sticks up and the paper passes over. If this is stuck or stiff and not free...it will indicate a paper jam permanently. If you cannot reposition it with your fingers or some pliers.......it will need a tech to fix it.
One other thing to check is the flag where the paper comes out. If you wiggle this and the error goes away then the flag is bent. You can try and bendit back into shape......otherwise it will need a tech to fix it.

The .fls file (firmware file) can be updated via the embedded web server of the printer.

I tried to download the firmware update your looking at. It appears that something is wrong with the download package Dell has on it website. Normally there would be an application included in the download to update the firmware or instructions on how to do it from the web-based configuration wizzard of the printer.
Under the "Fixes and Enhancements" section of the download, it lists this file as the "Intial Relase" which to me means it is the version of firmware that shipped with your printer. I doubt using it will fix any issue you are having. If you still want to proceed, here it the steps I've taken that you'll have to take:
I tried to contact Dell to get the download fixed, but they wont talk to me without the
serial number/Service Tag of the printer or account number that I requested from you in the above clarification request. The instruction for the download say that you are supposed to be downloading and "exe' file, but the link is downloading the "R156881.fls" file you are getting.
You could alternatively contact Dell yourself to resolve the download issue. Dell contact page:

I have the problem with the paper jam error, though there isn´t any paper jam. I´ve read in an other topic, that the firmware update should solve this.
