For most disc read errors the PS3 will need to go back to Sony. Contact their customer careline on 0870 599 8877 and they will swap your unit for another. Be advised that any attempts to repair yourself may invalidate your warranty or result in repair costs if you are past the 12 months. They are still replacing launch day units at no cost.
I had a 60g launch day unit which stopped reading discs a couple of weeks ago and within 4 days they swapped my unit completely free of charge. Even came to my work address so I didn't have to take time off work. :)

Re: the disc goes in but unable to read it.
The PS3 laser has two wavelegths at 405nm(bluelight) and 750nm (redlight). the highpower lower wavelength diode on your machine im afraid has failed. The bluray light reads bluray games and bluray dvd's. the lower power red light reads audio cds and regular dvds/dvdrs. you need to install a new laser ..only 100 i charge or 160 from sony (150+TAX+2 week wait+frustration from not playing COD4..lol) Now if you have the newer model laser KES410ACA, then you have 2 SEPARATE light sources...these tend not to fail as often. it costs the same to fix
a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US. click here to Talk to a Technician (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need. Goodluck!
The problem is not normally with the discs itself but with the lens coming away from where it needs to be. You just need to readjust the lens that sounds difficult but really it is not too tough. Check out this PS3 Repair blog and get the fix you need.

To start the laser reads disc's differently. A CD or DVD is just your typical disc then you have blueray which your games are burned onto a blueray disc. Your optical lens is damaged and likely unable to read blueray format.
If you have a blueray movie or can borrow one, try it and see if it still plays that will determine if that is the problem.
If so you will have to replace the optical lens,
Note: Opening your PS3 will void your warranty, so if you
are still covered, it is best to send it in to Sony for repair.
Good news is it is easy to do and there are many free step by step tutorials with pictures or videos to show you how. If you must do it yourself.
Hi, Follow these steps when you are facing "disc wont read" problem Step 1:Remove the disc from the system. Step 2:Use a cloth to clean in small circles around the disc (not in a big circle going around the disc). Use DVD or CD disc cleaner if available. If you use cleaner, use a different dry cloth to clean the disc no more than three minutes after application. Step 3:Verify that there are no disc-destroying marks on the disc. Deep scratches and chips in the middle of the disc can render a disc inoperable. As your Playstation 3 is used more and more, the lens that reads Blue-ray discs can become dirty. This will lead to discs skipping or not being read by the console. If you find this is happening on your Blue-ray discs, either movies or games, you may need to have your console cleaned. Be careful when attempting any sort of cleaning of your console, as improper handling will further damage the Playstation 3. Contact a member of Playstation Support for information on console maintenance. Thank you !!
The most common reason for the PS3 not reading discs is a bad
drive. The following website sells the drives and does installs:
drive should fix any reading issues you are having with your games, or
issues inserting your games or ejecting them (or lack thereof). This is
the entire DVD drive assembly mechanism replacement for your PS3
including a new laser. If your discs are not ejecting, or you cannot
insert a disc -- or you can insert a disc but it will not load, this is
what you need to get your PS3 going again! Hope this will help...
Try keeping off your system for 10-15 minutes and try again. If problem exists go to the shop from where you bought your PS3 and ask them for replacement of your drive or your drive lens. I think drive sounds better.
hi your ps3 has a damaged laser head making it unable to read the discs, or the laser head is dirty and needs cleaning, take it to a repair shop or if you know how to fix this you can try it yourself, if it is under warrenty you may want to use it up.
