I have a new garmin 200W gps but it does not have routes that have been changed. I am thinking of upgrading my chip and am told I can purchase a 2009 disc and load from my computer. What must I buy to update and hook on to my gps?

If you are willing to spend $89.00 you can purchase a lifetime maps update/upgrade through the Garmin website. All you have to do is log into their website - www.garmin.com - connect your Garmin to your computer with the USB cable and purchase the upgrade. You might want to consider purchasing a new Garmin that comes with lifetime maps as your 200 is an older unit and its life may be short. A new unit, like a 1300LM, runs $139.99 at Best B**, as of 01/30/11, will come with a new fresh battery and the newest maps pre-loaded and it will allow you to update those maps FREE for the life of the unit. These ideas might help you wayward travels. GOOD LUCK

in the tools/settings/navigation menu change route preference to faster time and also check your avoidances

1. Back up your Favorites.
2. Perform a Hard Reset.
3. Download and then run Garmin WebUpdater to replace its firmware / system software.

Unfortunately i dont think you can as this unit is set up for car navigation, but try Garmin support and maybe they have a solution to your problem, happy new year mate good luck, Colin.

Yes. You have to pay for them either at the store or going through garmin website itself. Garmin does have a lifetime update for maps for $120 + tax if you want to go that route. Other than that it will be around $70 for the 2010 maps. The 2009 would be cheaper to get right now.

Not being able to start up is a sign that the system software or firmware of your Nuvi has become corrupt.

2009 is the latest mapping Garmin has. If your unit is running 2008 or before, and your unit was first used within the last 60 days, you can register your unit with Garmin.com and receive a free map update.

You can download new maps..........free......................but..........

I had this problem last year with my garmin 200 and when I called they said that I was out of the 60 day time window for a free map upgrade but they would give it to me anyway. They gave me detailed instructions on how to download a new map free of charge but they didnt explain which selection replaced what I already had on mine.
As a result, I downloaded the wrong maps and have much less detail. Even though its the "2009" version, its less acurate than my old maps were. But its worth a shot, better than paying for them.
