Microwave shut-off within 2-3 minutes

I have a Magic Chef model MC0160UQ. Within 2-3 minutes of heating food it shuts off completely for about 5min. Also, when I select the low fan it does not work, however the high fan works. Please assist with these issues if possible. Am I able to fix or adjust the magnetron myself since it may be overheating? or what should i do?????

micro shuts off after about 10 min of cooking and comes on after it seems to have cooled off

  • dperr219 Dec 02, 2008

I have the same problem but found that the cooling fan for the magnetron is not going on with the over. I assume the electronics heat up and shut down. I will check the fan connections in the next day or so and hope it's that simple.....Another note- I bought this oven approximately 2 years ago but just installed it last week, so basically it's brand new ( but out of warrenty of course)...

Yesterday and today after trying to melt chocolate for candy, the microwave completely shut off - turned on again after about 5 minutes. Has happened occasionally in the past but usually after having the stove/oven on underneath it for an extended amount of time so I figured it was just overheating externally as well as internally. But this was with no heat under it and only about 3 minutes of use. Ridiculous! I can't return it as one helpful person suggested since it's out of warranty, but it is certainly not old enough and not used enough to expect this kind of weird quirk. P.S. This is not my specific model of microwave but it is a Magic Chef and obviously the product brand has issues.

Why don't you return it? I think this is a common problem. We returned ours to Home Depot with no questions asked.

I had similar problems with my microwave shutting off to protect the unit and then coming on normally after it cooled down. I finally found out what my problem was after 6 months of it being installed. My exhaust fan was not working properly. When I say exhaust fan, I do not mean the fan itself. There are 2 or 3 ways to set up the direction of the exhaust fan depending on where your ducting outlet is in your home. I found that the little flap that swings opens that the fans blows open, actually was not swinging open at all or just a little bit. Therefore the microwave would heat up with the warm air and shut down. I just removed the flakey metal swing hinge and now my microwave works like a charm. If you can get to that hinge or remove the whole unit from its wall mount and run it with it sitting on the table or work-bench, that would tell you if it was a ducting problem. Good Luck

We went back to the home depot exchanging the same microwave three times (and installing each one!) before we figured out the deal with the shut off.  My wife was attempting to melt white chocolate in a plastic bag.  White chocolate is basically wax and has very little moisture in it and has the same effect as running an empty microwave.  After a minute or two, the power center of the microwave would overheat and shut down, acting much like a thrown breaker.  After several minutes, it would reset itself.  What are you trying to microwave?  If you can heat a cup of water for 5 minutes without issue, the problem is probably what you're trying to heat up.  If it can't heat water, the problem is likely with the microwave itself. As for the fan, you can't select the low fan setting when the microwave is running, because the high setting is already on by default.  You should be able to select low speed when not using the microwave. Good luck!

If the microwave is above the stove, the heat sensors in the microwave
may turn on fans to cool it even though the microwave itself is not
running. It tries to save its life. It should turn off when the stove is not
heating it.

Magic Chef MCD11E3W Just Dies While Cooking

There is an internal cooling fan. Sounds like your s has failed and its thermal cut out is turning it off. Take it for professional repair. You can't open microwaves as they have special security screws, plus there is high voltage and dangerous compounds plus the radiation itself.

Shuts down for 5 minutes

I have the same problem with my new magic cheff over the stove microwave oven. I call magic chef and they gave me the 800 number for the service center (1-800-775-0202). When I described the problem they told me to just put a plate under the popper and this wouldn't happen anymore. I haven't tried it yet but here's hoping.

The cooling fan is a must!

Otherwise, the magnetron will be ruined, and that drives up the repair cost.

If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa:

Magic chef microwave shuts down

We had the same problem with our brand new Magic Chef. Before going through the trouble of taking it back I called Home Depot. After talking to a Home Depot Rep I am told that the overheat sensor is under the glass plate directly beneath the popcorn bag. Popcorn gets very hot and the heat of the popcorn causes the sensor to shut the machine down. I would imagine this would be the same for a baked potato.
Very poor design.
I was told to put a microwave safe plate down and put the popcorn bag on it. This should help to reduce the heat and not trip the sensor.
A safety sensor is great, but not if it keeps tripping the machine and shutting down!
