Question about HP Printers & Copiers

1 Answer

HP laserjet 4L has suddenly started printing lines and smudges. Toner is not an HP toner and is about two years old. Is it a toner problem or is this workhorse printer nearing the end? I've had it about fifteen years! Thanks T.J.

I have the same problem. I have been using the HP 4L for primarily printing Quickent checks. It has an HP toner cartridge which is several years old. It has been printing smudges and lines down the center of checks for close to a year now. I do not want to pay $98 for the HP toner & question how well the $33 OEM remfg cartridges will perform. Have you found you solved your problem by replacing the toner cartridge? I would hate to buy either & then find it is the printer's problem.

This has been the MOST reliable piece of computer equipment I have purchased in 20 years. It just keeps being reliable except for this problem. I do not trust the quality of the printers you can now purchase for less than the cost of toner.

It's al black horizontal lines/smudges over the printed page. How to cean this?

Black Horizontal Lines are normally caused by a Light Burnt Drum.

The drum in built into the toner cartridge for this machine so replacing the cartridge will fix the problem.

My HP LaserJet 1300 printer smudges the entire document and the toner is very faint. The cartridge has toner in it.

It means your machine needs cleaning. You can purchase cleaning sheets from the office supply store, and insert it like a regular document, hit print, and the dirt comes off.

We have an hp Laser Jet 1300 printer. Approx 2" from left there is a smudge line from top of printed document to the bottom where the ink in the letters is scraped off and there is ink smudged onto...

First of all..do u refill ur toner?? if so i advise u to get a new original one and refill that..do refill the same toner for more than 3 times. Secondly, How old is ur printer and how many pages do u print weekly..or u be better off buying a new one...Finally, I think the problem is with the heated rubber rollers that are not melting the charged toner particles causing it to smudge. try cleaning the printer by removing any dust...i prefer that u try it out with a new toner and see if u have a same problem.

Printer is printing two smudge marks on my documents.

Two parts of the printer can affect this.
1) the toner cartridge
2) the fuser

Testing can be done to determine the problematic part.

Do a print using manual feed. Once the last bit of paper goes into the machine, open the printer door.
Remove the toner to check if smudge is there.
Replace toner cartridge if there is smudge, replace fuser it not.

Laser jet produces printouts that are smudged and dark

Remove the toner cartridge and use a soft cloth to wipe the photo drum clean of toner. Put it back and try again, if you still get bad prints, then you need a new toner cartridge.

New toner, still get lines on paper when printing

Is there toner streaks on the drum?
Remove toner cartridge and push back the drum cover (on bottom)to check. Could be just another bad cartridge.
If the drum is clean, then it's coming from the fuser. You can have it replaced /rebuilt, but I personally wouldn't spend any money on this one.

I have a HP LaserJet4L. It has suddenly started to print smudgy lines and stripes. The toner is two years old and is not an HP toner. Could the printer be nearing the end, I've had it 15 years and i'ts...

It is probably the fuser unit that is causing the problem. Yes it would be better to purchase a new laserjet. They are very inexpensive, from $90. to $180.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

HP Laserjet smudges across entire page

More than likely you have a bad toner cartridge.

When the paper is fresh out of the printer, does the ink that looks okay smudge if you rub it with your finger? If so, it means the fuser is going bad. Otherwise, it's probably a bad toner cartridge that's leaking toner onto the paper.
