Smeg fme20ex microwave - bulb replacement!

I have a smeg fme20ex microwave and need to replace the internal bulb. There is none visible in the unit and neither a part which can be unscrewed to expose the bulb.

Do i need to remove the unit from the fitted kitchen (will be a problem as it is sealed to the cupboards!)?

Normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the previously hidden screws you need to remove.

Or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I made) that demonstrates how it's done.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

SOURCE: I need to buy a new MBBS Thermador Microwave

I spent the better part of three days trying to find a microwave that will fit and it's hard because so many are on line only. Last night I successfully installed the 2.2 cu. ft. GE profile counter top unit with inverter technology. The unit is an exact match, the Thermador even fits in the GE box with the styrofoam! I installed the venting materials for the side and rear vents and the platform at the bottom. I put the clips and decorative molding on and it's perfect! I found it in stock at Lowe's for $198. I took me about 45 minutes total to install. If I can do it, anyone can - 48 year old mom with 5 kids!

SOURCE: Replace light bulb on Whirlpool GMC305PDS07

You'll need to remove the outer cover (wrapper) to get to the bulb.

Always unplug a microwave before removing or installing any bulbs.

On an over the range type, remove the vent grille across the top and see if bulbs can be accessed there. There may be a panel on the bottom covering the light(s), instead.

If not, you'll have to remove it from the wall, then remove the outer cover. If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

You can download Whirlpool owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

See these links before proceeding:

The screws you need to remove should be pretty obvious, but a special driver (such as a T20H type or GTXH20-100) may be needed.

Be sure to put all the screws back in the right holes, since some may be special grounding screws.

Bulbs can be had locally in most grocery stores, hardware stores, home improvement centers, and big box or department stores.

Many models use halogen lamps. You must not touch the new one with your bare skin, as the oils will shorten the bulb life.

The bulb of most microwave ovens can only be accessed by removing the main cover.

This is usually a fairly simple procedure and requires only the loosening of a few screws which are situated on the side and/or back of the oven.
Once the cover is removed the bulb should be easily visible & usually consists of the ES or screw in type of connection.

Best wishes,

Microwave oven turns off

Many over-the-range microwave ovens suffer from intermittent problems caused by excessive moisture from the range/stove entering the microwave cabinet and collecting on the circuitry. Often the problem is with one or two simple connections that may need tightening or soldering. But, to repair these components, the microwave cabinet needs to be opened. So we recommend that you seek the assistance of a qualified appliance repair technician.

It may be worth getting it repaired. Shop around for prices and see if it is worth your while to repair it or simply buy a new one :)

Smeg Microwave Components

Generally speaking, light bulbs can be had from common sources such as department stores, home improvement stores, and hardware stores. Of course, I don't know much about what you'd call those places "down under and over a bit", but I'm sure the terms will translate well enough. *grin*

Replacing the door catch

If you're talking about a hook-like device that sticks out of the door and goes into a hole in the chassis of the microwave (or any other internal part of the door for that matter) you'll have to take the door apart. Brands and models vary, but some use screws which are obvious, and others use hidden hooks similar to the ones in the drawing I've added to this post. If you can post or e-mail photos of the area where the part goes, we may be able to translate our experience with other brands to yours.
