Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

PS3 won't take disc

My PS3 was freezing up during gameplay and sometimes would not read the disc at all. I took the system apart to clean the lens and then put it back together, being very careful not to screw anything up and put all of the parts back exactly how they were. Now, I can't insert any discs..I took it apart a couple more times to loosen and tighten the screws in the bluray player and that didn't help. I'm not sure what I did wrong. My only concern was that, when I took it apart, I noticed that there was still a disc in the player. I needed to remove that by hand and I was afraid that that maybe knocked something off allignment. Any advice is greatly appreciated...warranty is up which is the only reason I took it apart myself in the first place.

Awesome, I will see what I can do when I get home. If not, I might take you up on your offer. Also, let's say that once it's accepting the disc, it still freezes....would you be able to fix that issue as well? Thanks for the help, I'll let you know how it goes.

  • Wukusick Nov 12, 2008

Yeah, I used a lens cleaner and lightly cleaned it with a q-tip, then dried it with the other side. I bought this system refurbished last January. It's one of the older 60 GB ones so I expected something to happen sooner or later.

  • Wukusick Nov 13, 2008

Ok, so I wasn't able to fix it. It still won't take discs at all. I also noticed from watching "how to" videos on youtube that there are a couple small peices that are missing from my ps3. I don't think that they are too important since it worked for almost a year after I bought it. But, like I said, I bought a refurbished one. So what would you suggest? Should I send it away to get fixed or buy a new one? How much do you think it would cost to fix it?

As for the 2 white tabs on the front.... u have to open it up and slide the big piece of plastic on the left side up.... if u look at that piece you should see that little wheels at the bottom are engaged with the wheel that is connected to that large piece. you won't and should not force it down but u can slide it up and doing so the white tabs will go down in the front. once u do that make sure there is little play on that large plastic piece u just moved up and very important make sure the wheels on the bottom are not engaged with the grove on the large plastic piece... and if its working correctly you should be able to move the plastic piece on the right side and it'll make the left side go the opposite way..

When reassembling bluray player you must take care to activate the side tracks (blackbars) back and forth , there should be very little play in the mechanism! there is also an aluminum wing towards the back underside of the blu ray drive. the wings have nipples at the tips that slide in the blackbars. finally put the top lid on, but dont screw it on tight yet. insert a dvd and then tighten the 5 black screws after smooth enrollment. hope this helps. if you like we can do it for you for $30

well thats a good point. theres a chance your laser may be bad..in that case you are looking at an extra $70 for the laser..i hope when you cleaned it, you used lens cleaning fluid or 91percent alcohol with a q tip...also too much pressure on the laser lens will damage it.

My ps3 keeps freezing during games

Problem: Your Playstation 3 console is freezing during gameplay. There are usually two problems that would cause your Playstation 3 to freeze during

gameplay. I will start with the most common problem:

1. The Blu Ray Laser is wearing out. This is a common issue among the newer video game consoles. The laser is constantly lighting up to read the discs while you are playing your Playstation 3 whether you are playing games, Blu Ray movies, or DVD movies. Eventually the laser will burn out. As it starts to wear out, first the games or movies will freeze. After a while, it will not read Blu Ray at all. Finally it will quit reading anything. You can find lasers at the following website starting at $49.95. The same website also performs repairs of the Playstation 3 console:

2. Overheating. This is less common. If your PS3 freezes and you shut it off and back on and it comes on ok, it's probably not overheating. If heat is the problem, it will freeze right away if you turn it back on right away without giving it time to cool off. If it turns on OK with no problem and doesn't immediately freeze up, the laser is your issue. If you turn it back on and it freezes right away, your PS3 may be overheating.

If your PS3 is overheating, the best thing to do is to make sure you do not keep it in an enclosed area. Playstation 3 systems and XBox 360 systems run very hot. You must keep it in the open so it gets as much cool air as possible! You can also upgrade the fan inside of your Playstation 3 with the Whisper Fan which increases cooling. You can also find it at the following website:

My 40gb ps3 freezes while playing discs. What do I

Hi,

This problem with the PS3 is usually associated with the Bluray drive or more specifically the optical laser on the drive which is failing to read the disk. Sony charge $150 for this repair if the console is outside warranty.

You could try cleaning the lens on the laser as this can work sometimes but this requires you to open the console and most often the lens is faulty and needs to be changed. For more information on the lens and how to access it either to change it or clean it please see this FixYa Tip.

Thanks for using FixYa

PS3 Won't Take Disc!

Hi, I think it was me who had helped you before. I will be glad to help again. Ok, first you have to tear apart your PS3 (just like when you cleaned it). Now looking at the rollers and "dogs" make sure that they are closed and not open all the way like when a disc is in it. Look at the flap on the top too make sure it opens and closes freely. Next, PLEASE BE CAREFUL!! Plug your PS3 in and try to hit the eject button, if it is reset and ready for a disc it will beep twice when you hit the eject button without a disc in it. Place the top back on the he DVD drive and try to insert a disc. At this point it should take it. If not then try hitting the eject again. Once the PS3 resets and takes and ejects discs again, then you can put it back together.

Constant disk read issues

It sounds like your laser is going bad. This is a common issue for the PS3. The tell-tale sign is it starts reading less and less and having more errors.

Error 8001002B

That is the common "dirty disc" error. If it happens with every game, it more than likely means that your Blu-Ray diode is dirty. Do you have the PS3 in a dusty environment? Be sure to clean the vents on the side, above the USB ports and on the back of the PS3 on a daily basis. A quick swipe of a soft cloth will do.

You can try several solutions for your problem, the most common to buy a can of air and blow it inside the disc drive in hopes of cleaning the diode. You can also try a CD/DVD cleaning disc.

If it happens with every disc this could also mean a dreaded Blu-Ray drive failure, or in your case, one that is in the process of failing.

If cleaning it does not work, I highly recommend you give Sony support a ring.
