go to help and type disk clean. Follow instructions. press ok this may ask for admin access. say yes. this might take a few mins depending on you computer history. in the mean time go to help again and type defragment. this may take some time. I mean hours depending on how old or long you have had the comp. After complete. Set defragment to about once a week. if it is still slow go to virus scan and follow instructions again this could take many hours, but worth it. Let me try to explane please (your computer is a huge box inside this box is thousands of other boxes and inside them are thousands more. o.k. When you do things on your comp and then save things your computer puts things in safe boxes everywhere/ anywhere. defragment puts all this information into files into one box for easy to find, at the top, no searching for things packed away in a box within a box within a box stuck at the very bottom. hope this helps, let me know how you get on.
check the recent programmes installed, they might be complicating your system. Also the processor could be smaller. Amount of Data stored also can cause the problem. If there is no improvement, back up your data and have the windows installed fresh using xp sp 2
Uninstall any unwanted software by using control panel, ADD/Remove Software.
move any photos, mp3s etc to a CD or external drive.
install and run some anti spyware software like ADAWARE (free download)
click my computer
right click your C drive
left click properties
click tools tab
click defragment now
click defragment button (and leave running for a few hours) this will place all your framented files which slow down disk read access into sequential (single part) files
finally to make a real difference
add more memory (thats RAM not hard disk)
Your computer has only 512MB of RAM.That will just barely run your XP,forget about doing anything else. You need a minimum of 1GB,2GB is even better.Your computer works in RAM not your hard-drive.The hard-drive is for storage, the RAM is for running your programs. http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01311536.pdf
This link is your manual and it will walk you thru the procedure.Hope this helps?
Hello Mike, Hi, may I suggest you try first to defrag your hard drive, Im sure when you power on your PC, the hard disk led keeps on blinking, your hard drive may have developed bad tracks and sectors, this slow moving process tends to go forever.
Defragmenting and checkdisk can find faults and bad sectors and tracks that slows down the performance of your PC.
Reformatting should be done if your defragmentation procedure fails to speed up your PC.
Try to run an antivirus program, which may help speed up your PC by detecting viruses, that tends to load forever, or slow down the booting process.
You might want to try running Disk Cleanup and Disk Defrag Utilities.....a bad block is usually marked as bad by the operating system if Disk Defrag sees it. Also, look at the properties of your hard drive to see how much free space is available, you may be running low on space after 2 years. If the disk utilities do not fix the slowness, we would have to look for other culprits....Good Luck
have you run the "disk cleanup" and "defragment" process ?? also your gonna need adware clean up process , you can download it for free , to eliminate adware and spyware that makes your comp run slow , heres the link:
