Try first unplugging power cable for five minutes and using a different power outlet, if you still get the problem, the unit has a faulty power supply on the board inside.

I have a recorder that whenever i put in video cassettes stops playing after a few seconds and turns the unit off. Can anyone help. Thanks

sounds like belts and rollers and any sensors you see need to be cleaned - it sounds like the unit thinks tape is at end and is shutting down

use qtip and rubbing alcohol to clean

try using different tape just to make sure it is not just a bad tape

Progressive Scan

Try these steps:

Locate the output jacks DVD player. Sometimes they are standard female RCA A/V jacks, like those found on the front of many VCRs. Others are more tricky, having a small jack that looks like a stereo headphones plug. These camcorders require a special cord that converts a 1/8" stereo signal into RCA A/V male plugs.
  1. Using the proper cord, connect your PLAYER to the VCR's RCA A/V input jacks, usually found on the front or back of your VCR.
  2. Turn on your VCR and TV, so you can see the input from the camcorder. You might have to select "Input 1/2", "Line 1/2", or "VIDEO" depending on your VCR model. You should now see whatever is on your camcorder displayed on your television.
  3. Press "Record" on your VCR, then press "Play" on your camcorder. That's it!

I turn the unit on and within 5 seconds it shuts down. If you attempt to play, rewind or fast forward, it will stop and shut down.

The unit's embedded software is running the system checks before powering up anything that has failed or could be damaged. The microprocessor could be bad too. Check for shorts on the outputs and inspect for burned components.

Recording from a vhs cassette...

This dvd/vcr unit is having a problem with component failure. It is probably in the main power supply section, since the unit shuts down. This can happen in these products due to the qulaity of component use in the product runs. The components usually have 5% to 10% failure rate. Which is usually taken care of by the product warranty. Unfornately this is a common problem with big manufactuers and large production runs. You need to have the unit tested and serviced at a service center. The service center will have all the service information to repair you unit. The Magnavox Customer support telephone is 1-800-605-8453. Tell them the model number of you unit and about the problem with the unit shutting down during use. They will be able to tell how to your unit serviced. I hope this information helps you with your problem.

Pioneer Dv 285 powers down after 15sec

Hi There, I've got the same problems with my DV 285. My power started going off approximately 5 to 10 minutes into the DVD. The only button that seems to work is the OPEN/CLOSE button. Once the tray closes, the unit shuts off. I can't even use the on/standby button to turn it on.

I had a similar problem, particularly when trying to use the DVD recorder, and when I turned on the unit it made a loud rapid clicking sound, and then immediately shut off. It appears to have been the VCR section of the unit (which I rarely use) that was causing the glitch, and the pragmatic solution was to simply leave a blank VCR cassette in the machine all the time. Then I was able to use the DVD recorder without the noise and shut-off problem. (posted 2009-07-22)
