Question about Compaq Armada E500 Notebook

1 Answer

Armada E500 I located some old MSDOS 6.2 disks and managed to install msdos 6.2 on the system. Using the old msdos commands I was able to create a DIR on the C: drive. I copied all the files to C:\DOS. I was able to do scandisk, defrag and attrib. I need the old command structure for the config.sys and autoexec.bat files. I also performed the FDISK function. The files on the a drive had .XX_ extensions and using the expand function was able to expand these files. tell me the systems disks contain, io.sys and what else?

What is ms dos command prompt

MS-DOS stands for Microsoft Disk Operating system. Its has CUI(Character User Interface) unlike Widows which has GUI(Graphical User Interface)
Which means you need to type commands in MSDOS. In windows we see icons, folder etc to work using mouse but MSDos is different.
To open MSDOS
Click Start goto Run - Type CMD and press Enter (for Windows XP) Click Start - Type CMD in search - Click on CMD (For Windows Vista and 7)

Whenever I open my microsoft word documents and try to edit it or even start a new document, it says the modification is not allowed because the selection is locked.

An evil virus has set an ACL (Access Control List) list entry prohibiting you from modifying your own documents - or changed the ownership of your documents to another account on the system.

If the computer upon which your documents reside is not yours, consult the system administrator, who may have reset file or directory permissions. If the PC is your personal box - virus/trojan horse/worm/rootkit/malware/spyware residual damage.

To repair ACL damage, use MSDOS command cacls. How:
1) login as "Administrator"
2. START>RUN> cacls
or bring up an MSDOS command prompt (from cmd.exe) and type in cacls /?

Anyway, the problem described above is a OS/System problem.
The only way I can think of that MSWord would prohibit modifying your own docs is that
you recently upgraded MSWord to Office2010, and your docs were created with an old, incompatible version of MSWord - but doesn't Microsoft have backward compatibility for
older .DOC files?

Computers? Easy??

If you are trying to boot with a cd then you need to have your cd rom drive as the first boot option, which is in the bios (f2 or DEL on boot up). I you have your own windows CD, then you can format the hard drive using the cd.

Need software

Your only hope is that you have a Windows XP pro installation disk to either repair or re install Windows, although a repair is only of use if you still have the principal windows installation. How is XP still there if the notebook has been formatted? If your recovery disk ;which I recon was on another partition on the hard drive is long gone, then the only solution is to purchase XP, although XP home is a cheaper, but just as good a version please rate this solution.
