Question about Pioneer SD-533HD5 53" Rear Projection HDTV

Pioneer SD-641HD5 red convergence - not chip problem!

This is a rear projection TV. The convergence from the menu has full control on vertical and horizontal of the blue and red CRTs. The green is fixed but it's in the correct spot in the middle of the screen and looks straight.
I can align the blue in both axis and the red in the vertical axis. I can move the red in the horizontal axis but I cannot correct it to align with the green. It stays always on the left side of the green.
Reading here I suspected this might be the horizintal convergence IC but after some thought and experiments I don't think so. Here is why.
From the convergence menu I can move the red stripe in the horizontal axis about the right distance as the blue can move. The only problem is that it is not centered on the screen around the fixed green stripe (the blue is centered correctly).
Now, here is another clue. I switched the connectors of the blue and red convergence... A neat trick, right?! ;-)
From the convergence menu I can still align both red and blue but again the blue is centered and the red is not!
Since the blue convergence can be corrected with either of the convergence channels (plugged to the blue or the red channel) and the red cannot be corrected on either of these channels, my conclusion is: The convergence circuit is fine, the problem is with the coarse red alignment.
But that conclusion is still just an assumption... Did anyone else have a similar issue with their rear projection TV? What advice can you give me?
I don't mind replacing ICs but I just don't want to do it for no reason...
If the problem is indeed a coarse alignment then I'd appreciate any tip on how to do that. I'm willing to experiment...

Replace Both of your STKs if they are STK392-110s do not go back with them use STK392-180s better ICs, The 110s fall apart and do not hold up.

I CANT ADJUST THE RED VERTICAL LINES ON MY JVC REAR PROJECTION TV. i HAVE DONE CONVERGENCE AND MANUALLY ADJUSTED THE RED LINES HORIZONTALLY, BUT NO LUCK WHAT CONTROLS TO USE VERTICALLY

If it will not adjust up or down or left and right the convergence chips need to be replaced.

See attached photos of board that is in your set:

All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video or dead set) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. In some cases the TV will also not show any video. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

The picture is warped red & blues distorted

Your Convergence ICs have failed. It is very common on rear projections. The solution is to replace the STK chips, check fuses and the resistors next to the STK chips. Replace as necessary and re-align via the service menu. It is about a $300 repair at a tv service center. You will need the service manual if you decide to do this yourself.

Try This:
When you notice the symptons Use this simple test to verify.
Go to the users menu on the tv.
Look for the converge option probably under setup or video setting. Converge is short for convergence to align the red and blue colors to the green color.

If you cannot move the red either horizontal or vertical, then the STK chip has failed for red section.
If you cannot move the blue either horizontal or vertical, then the STK chip has failed for the blue section.

If you can move both in each direction then the problem is something else.

Note if one STK chip fails, you replace both regardless. They will be right next to each other.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com
