Sometimes the chip that lets the printer know it's good doesn't work.

Try this to see if it's the chip not being recognized...

Turn the printer off.
Hold down these 4 buttons: (CANCEL - OK - BLACK - COLOR) then power on while still holding the 4 buttons.
Continue to hold the 4 buttons until a rainbow colored screen comes up.
You can then let go of the 4 buttons.
Press the power button again.
You should now be in MFG Mode.

Try to print something.
-----
The screen may say something you're not used to seeing (such as... ink threshold exceded or whatever), but try to send something to the printer anyway.

If it prints, then there was a problem with the chip recognition and see if you can get an exchange. I just kept mine in manufacturer's mode until that ink cartridge ran out without problems!

Good luck!

That printer uses the HP-02 which is really miniscule in terms of ink. The yellow I think only has 3-5ml of ink. So if you're going to print a lot you may need to buy more cartridges. I don't have a 5180 but I've helped some of my friends w/ theirs. The cartridge has a chip that will give you an expiry depending on when it was manufactured. Usually within 12-18months of the manufacture date. Check out also the expiry date on the cartridge. This might be a possible cause. another is sometimes the cartridge needs to be inserted properly. Some Hp printers have little quirks that make them super sensitive on how they are inserted. Try putting it in slowly and as correct as possible. I don't know if these will help. Let me know if it does or doesn't. I'll see what I can do.

You can go into the print properties and set it to print black only, however if any of the color cartridges are empty the printer may not print until you replace whichever cartridge is empty.

How do I reset the ink levels?

We have an issue of missing or replace yellow cartridge. Please feel free to contact the HP support for replacement of the printer, if the printer is in warranty status. HP would replace the printer.
