I replaced the laser in my ps3 60gb model and now when I go to put a disc in I have to put it in almost half way before it will take it in by itself. I have another 60gb and a 40gb, when you put the disc in about a inch or so it will auto accept the disc. Want to know if there is something i did wrong and also on the top of this drive where the opening is there is a small circuit board with some type of sensor or something, the board has a very small black and red wire coming from it that connects to the drives main board, what is this sensor board and what is it used for? Thanks in advance.

Re: Ps3 loading disc
Hey it appears you failed to connect the very small optic sensor. this sensor tells the drive to activate the slot loading mechanism. without it connected the automated slot drive doesnt work..connect it carefully...was it damaged when you removed it?

There might be a problem with your disc drive, you could test it by instead of putting a game in your console, put a dvd or blu-ray in, if the movies load, the laser may be dirty if they don't load, then there is probably a problem with your laser and it would need to be repaired from Sony.
The most common reason for the PS3 not reading discs is a bad drive. The following website sells the drives and does installs:
This drive should fix any reading issues you are having with your games, or issues inserting your games or ejecting them (or lack thereof). This is the entire DVD drive assembly mechanism replacement for your PS3 including a new laser. If your discs are not ejecting, or you cannot insert a disc -- or you can insert a disc but it will not load, this is what you need to get your PS3 going again! Hope this will help...
well, the 40gig model of the ps3 can have either the dual laser lens, or the single laser lens in it. they started out with the KES-400A single laser lens, but somwhere along the line, they started putting the KES-410A dual laser lens in them, which is supposed to be a more reliable laser lens, but they do fail as well. the most common reason why a ps3 won't read ps3 games and bluray discs, but will read dvds or cds is because they have a red diode that only reads dvds and cds, and a blue diode that reads bluray and ps3 game discs. i would say your blue diode has kicked the bucket and needs to be replaced. you will either need to send the system to sony for repair, or to a third part company to have it replaced, or you can replace the laser lens assembly yourself
it sounds like your laser is gone you can replace it if you have any knolage of opening a ps3 there are loads of videos of how to do this on youtube i my self had the same problem its not that hard to fix
That sounds like a faulty laser. Unfortunatly,Sony has not fixed this yet and i don't think they will anytime soon. I would suggest cleaning the laser lens first with alcohol and a q tip,if that doesnt work, have the laser lens professionally. If none of the above help, then it's the spindle motor and that can be tested by putting your hand on the ps3 after you slide a disk into the loading slot and feeling for very small vibrations.
You've done everything I would have done honestly. Take a can of air and blow it into the drive to make sure dirt or dust isn't on the laser which could affect if it sees discs or not.
The better thing to try if you are good at opening up your ps3 and then removing your drive and opening that is to take a damp q-tip with a bit of glass cleaner and clean your laser in the drive gently. Then put the drive back together and hook the cables back up to the ps3. You can leave the cover to the ps3 off for this step. Turn on the ps3 and try different blu-ray, dvd's, music cd's, game discs, etc. If it still doesn't read any of them then either the laser or the drive i bad. If it reads some discs and not others then its a weak laser and the laser would need to be replaced.
If you have to replace the laser or the drive, you can do a search on Ebay and usually find them fairly cheap.
Hope this helps and let me know if I can be of further assistance.
