Drive belt comes off the rear pulley.

Craftsman 42 inch riding mower 8 years old. This was a problem since new. I only wish I would have returned this lemon right away. The drive belt jumps out of the rear drive pulley and gets jambed up underneath the pulley. I have to remove the bagger and then take off the rear plate to get at the belt. I end up cutting the belt off and replacaing it with a new one. This happens every season. The Sears tech who came out the first time said they had problems with the drive belt jumping off the rear pulley. I wish I could fix this.

Hi, this is a easy solution. on your drive pulley, there should be three belt keepers to keep the belt from coming off. ( belt keeper is a 1/4" dia. rod that goes over the pulley)

If the bearings and pulleys are in good shape, alignment should be checked. Though with alignment problems you ran into bearing and even pulley problems also.

Drive belt slips on Husqvarna YTH21K46 riding lawnmower, installed new drive belt and it slips. mower is 2 years old

I had this same issue. New belts and correct routing did not solve the problem. The issue with my mower was the tabs that come off the frame that you bolt the transaxle (the drive for the rear wheels and axle) had almost completely torn/cracked away. This allowed the transaxle to tilt forward under a load and slip the belt off the rear drive pulley. You see no mention of this at the dealer or company sights. The tabs are so thin this is going to happen, in my opinion, in time. I reinforced this area with 1/4 inch angle iron and have had no further belt issue.

It sounds like your drive belt is slipping. The belt may be worn out, or the tensioning pulley is not returning to its proper position when clutch is let out. Check for pulley travel to see it returns to full engage position, maybe there is grass build up hindering it.(this is the belt that goes from the engine to transaxle). Happy New Year.

Sears Craftsman riding mower V belt getting chewed

I believe you may have the belt over one or more of the belt retainers next to the pulleys. They are 5 or 6 inches long and about a 1/4 inch in diameter. You have to loosen them when you put the belt on then adjust them to where they are just barely touching the back of the belt. They keep the belt from jumping off.

Need to replace drive belt.Never replaced. 42' Craftsman riding lawn mower. How difficult is this. How do you access rear drive pully

Take a look at how the belt is installed. Then you will have to remove the mower deck and belt from the pulley on the engine. There is probably something by the engine pulley that you will have to remove so the belt will come off. It might be a shoulder bold or a rod with a bolt holding it on. Same with the rear pulley. Then you just have to put the belt on one pulley and watch your fingers so you don't pinch them and turn the other pulley and the belt should go on. reinstall any bolts you removed and install the deck.

I need a diagram for installing a deck belt on a 42' Craftsman Mod.#917259330

You can download the User Manual here from ManageMyHome,

(Just copy, and paste the above into your address bar, then press the Enter key)
On this page where it has Go in the blue square, go below that, and click on -> View Manual.
This is a PDF file download. Took me about 12 seconds to see the first page, (I have Medium speed DSL )

Page 22, (Service and Adjustments), starts showing the routing of the belts.
The deck belt makes a T shape. It goes around the two mower blade pulleys, (Mandrel Pulley), and then around the engine shaft pulley. There is a tension pulley is on the left side, it's on the outside of the belt, and pushes IN on the belt. There is a tension pulley on the right side. It's on the outside of the belt, and pushes IN. (Pushes in. Pushes towards the center of the mower)

The Motion Drive belt goes around the rear end pulley, (Transaxle Pulley),
goes up the left side of the mower, to a pulley that is mounted solid to the deck, (Stationary Pulley), comes to the inside of that pulley, then goes to the outside of the Clutching Pulley, up around the engine shaft pulley.
From there, it comes back along the right side, to all the way to the Transaxle Pulley.

Should you wish to save a copy of the above manual, it's easy. In the header bar at the top of the PDF file is a Floppy Disk icon. It's the second icon from the left. Hovering your mouse cursor on it, will briefly reveal,
"Click to save this file to your computer or another location"

You will then see a ->Save a copy:, small window come up.
At the bottom of this window is the Filename:, box.
Put your mouse cursor in the box right after the -> f, in .pdf
Left-click Twice. Make 1 space with your spacebar. Now type ->
Craftsman 42 inch Mower Manual. Then go to the bottom right of the window, and click on -> Save.

If you do not have your downloads set to download to your My Documents folder, this will go to your desktop screen. In any event, just double-click on it to open it. You can also burn a copy off to a CD.
(If you do not type Craftsman 42 inch Mower Manual, or something you will recognize later, you will be going around looking for ->L0901538.pdf)

Without the model number, I couldn't tell you what belt goes on the ground drive. That 174883 is a 5/8 x 97" and is your deck drive belt. Your ground drive belt may just need replacing. They will wear thin and loosen up between the pulleys and cause the problems you're having. The old belt may still have the numbers on it.
