I own an HR-XVC30U. I recently hooked the VCR up to a new TV. Certain functions are able to be displayed on the TV screen. However, certain functions are not, including the "Setup Menu", "Program Check", and "Prog", to name a few. When I select the "Display" button, the information is correctly displayed on my TV screen, which implies it is properly connected.
The instruction manual that came with the unit is useless.
There were several screens that were unavailable and there seemed to be no obvious solution so I treated it like a PC and rebooted the unit. In terms of this unit, it meant unplugging the unit for an hour and then plugging it back in. All functionality is now available once again.

Sure it has a tunner look at the back of the set you will see two male connectors one has input and the other has out put.input is for the cable comming from your cable provider and out put is where you connect to your tv.just program it to cable from the menu display and you will be able to see all your channels depaends on the amount stored in the vcr.
I read the instruction manual one more time. It said to tune my TV to Video and voila, the VCR worked. All JVC VCR's seem to need the tv tuned to Video to play back. I had an older JVC VCR and I had to do the same thing with it. Thanks anyway.
Unplug it and wait 5min plug it back in and sometines it will work, I have three units they all do the same thing , with two of them the unpluging no longer works. I can't find anyone who knows whats wrong either
Had the same problem on my JVC vcr/dvd combo unit.
You need to turn off the timer function. I did this by making sure my remote was in the "VHS" mode...turn the swith from TV to the right (found on the remote in the upper left corner...an then hit the "vcr" button. Then point the remote at the VCR unit and hit the No. 4 button (timer turns off). Your unit should not have the red timer displayed and you should be able to play your tapes okay.
