I own a PAL Panasonic NV GS120 and basically it won't record or playback anything. It shows a black screen with zero timecode even with tapes with footage and timecode on them. When I press the record button it functions and the red lamp comes on and timecode is recorded. However when I switch to playback mode it's just black and the timecode doesn't move. When I switch the camera off and on, the timecode is gone again. I have tried a panasonic head cleaning tape twice, no change. The tape mechanism doesn't seem to function correctly, there is very little noise during operation, usually you can hear the mechanism working, it's not silent. I should mention that the spindles (for playback, record, rewind and fast forward) seem to work. I asked my college camera technician about it and he said I should probably throw it away as repairs would be cost more than the camera's worth. I suspect it's an electrical fault but the camera was in a bag that was dropped from about 2feet onto the floor, clumsy German airport staff! This almost certainly caused the problem as the camera worked fine the day before my trip, but not since. The CCDs and optical workings of the thing still work perfectly, just not record or playback. If anyone could shed some light I'd be very grateful. Thanks. James
