Look in the mini-pci slot on the back of your computer (1 screw opens the compartment) and make sure you have the 10/100 ethernet & 56k combo modem & that both plugs are firmly seated in their ports on the mini-pci card.

sometimes there is just a 56k modem card installed, in which case you will not have ethernet high speed internet capability.

Easy to tell which mini-pci card you have.
1. The ethernet/modem combo has two ports on the card (wide for ethernet & skinny for modem) to connect to the corresponding two wires coming from the motherboard.

2.The modem alone one only has one skinny port available on the card .

I have a ibm a30 it is lock and i cant unlock it .Is there a password from ibm that i can unlock it to chang it.

You must be referring to the bios password or maybe the power on password. You can try taking out the yellow coin cmos battery located under the cover for the modem/wireless card/ bluetooth card bay. Unplug the wire and leave out for 24 hours or longer and this might do the trick. Make sure you unplug the computer and take any batteries out of the machine beforehand. If this does not work then you can always get a company to unlock it for you for a fee. Check ebay and you will see auctions based on the model of notebook you own. In your case click here http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-LENOVO-Thinkpad-BIOS-Password-A30-A31-T30-T42p-T61p_W0QQitemZ400107955932QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item5d284ae6dc

Good Luck!

IBM ThinkPad T20

Wow, a lot of information but I'm unclear as to what you are trying to do.

Are you connecting the T20 directly to the T40 using a cat5 cable and then trying to access the internet on the T20 via the modem?

Connecting the two computer together using a normal cat5 will not work, you need to use a crossover cable otherwise you are connecting the send to the send and the receive to the receive.
You can also use a hub, a switch or a router if you have any of those on hand.

As for the modem, I suggest you unplug the telephone line from the modem and plug it into a phone and see if you can hear a dial tone. If you cannot hear a tone either the extension is bad (replace) or you outlet is defective. If you can hear a tone, the modem card may be defective.

Error Message on boot

Hi,
IBM requires using a "branded" network adapter, meaning one that has IBM's name on it, no matter if it's broadcom, etc. There is a couple of workarounds for this problem which would enable you to use whatever wireless adapter you wish. I would google IBM R40, and error 1802 and you'll find the application you need. Unfortunately, I'm not able to offer it to you here.
Good luck

The ethernet port is not working, and the network card is not being detected in device manager

If the device manager is not detecting the network device it is not going to work. turn off the laptop and remove the network/modem device located on the bottom of the laptop, then restart the laptop, now shutdown the laptop again and reinstall the device restart the laptop if device manager still does not detect the device then it is defective and will need to be replaced.
