External HDD are similar to the normal internal HDD, only difference is that The physical harddrive is only place into the casing with usb terminal port so you can remove the physical HDD. Your casing's usb terminal may be damaged. Borrow a casing for a external usb HDD from a friend that is working and use it to extract your data to a PC. Hope it helps.

Spins but makes a beeping sound and wont register.

Well, It sounds like there is something lodged in your Hardware drive...The beeping is probably a warning signal to tell you that it is not properly booting up...You should go to a Computer Repairman...

Tip

Seagate FreeAgent Desk 500GB not reconized and just beeps

Hi, anyone looking at this tip please be patient as the link that was below is changing to another site, it shows a link from You Tube on how to take the Seagate apart so anyone with the problem with the unit just making beep sounds and not being reconized by their P.C.
As all the threads i saw like my 1st thread reporting about my friends Seagate FreeAgent Desk 500GB asking about his problem and no-one was getting replies, and they where getting frustrated, I decided to find out. Someone has replied to my other thread with the same answer as taking it apart and connecting it to a P.C. So to help others who need their important files from the external HardDrive I have made a step by step guide so even novice P.C. users like myself can attempt to sort it out without being charged loads $-£ etc.. It seems unfair for all these users to buy something new and with in 1 week - 2 months it fails and they have important files etc.. stuck on the HardDrive and being charge to retrieve it. I'm not looking to cause any trouble just want to help others out. (link no longer availiable, it is being amended)

Hi i have an external HD...Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1 TB...it is working smoothly on my laptop and other computers..however as soon as i want to connect it to my desktop, it is not being detected. My...

Connect some other USB device (keyboard? mouse? memory-stick?) to your desktop?
Are those devices detected? If not, then either:
* the USB port(s) on your desktop are damaged,
* the device-drivers for the USB ports on your desktop are not installed.

Try connecting it to a different desktop/laptop, to see if the Seagate works at all, on any desktop.

Seagate external harddrive with windows 98 OS

Remove (or take to your local computer shop) the Win 98 hard drive from the computer.
Put this drive in an external USB drive enclosure.
Plug this enclosure into a Windows XP vintage computer.
Copy the data to this computer.

Save Win 98 drive for posterity!

When i connect my seagate via usb nothing comes up on my pc, the light comes on on the external h/d but nothing pops up on the pc? help please i need precious photos on it. thanks

have you try connect your pen drive to the same usb port, is it working?
If Pendrive is working but not the Seagate hardisk. Most propably is your USB power is not enough to support the External Seagate hard disk, you need to supply more power to the Seagate hard disk by using USB Y cable(1 end connect to Seagate hardisk where the other end got 2 USB connector to connect to your PC).

Maxtor basics external drive

Hi Nuisance101, I recall your running vista. Vista is a nightmare. If you cound only see the troubles we see on a daily basis here at FixYa you'ed understand. It's a common problem with Vista not seeing USB devices, externial devices. It does & then the next second it doesn't. Same for all external devices. I'm am 100% sure the trouble is not your system or your devices. It's Vista. I have gone over dozens of post from vista users. One would think MS has been on vacation since the release of vista. You can look at vista's web site for help for a possible fix, at this link. (I have no faith). MS blames driver software. Your Maxtor drive is external. Henve no driver software.
So it falls into that vista area of one time vista see's the drive & the next it does not.
Either way I though Maxtor addressed vista issues. I prefer Seagate drives myself. Personally know lots of people who's Maxtor's drives have just gone down for no reason. Seagate bought Maxtor.

Most of the post from vista users, claim users should check vista's updates often. Since Max Blaster did its job, I'm inclined to blame vista.

I wish I could give you a better fix or suggestion but I'm up against vista. That's why I run WinXP Pro. I do not have these problems.

Best wishes Nuisance101!
Mike
